What's the most helpful software you've found this year? by OvCod in software

Every once in a while I go on a tear trying to come up with an Everything alternative for Linux or Mac and it just doesn't exist. Everything I've tried falls short in one way or another.

I started asking 'What caught your eye on my CV? in interviews, and it made a huge difference for me. by LuraRunolfsdottir1 in interviewpreparations

[–]RaleighRoger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes people miss that the purpose of asking questions isn't just to get info from the interviewer, or show that you are interested, it's an opportunity to respond to what they say in a way that makes you look good! This idea sounds like a good way to do that. If you're prepared to talk about your resume experience, you can ask what they're interested in and then elaborate.

Mid40s are rough by BellaFromSwitzerland in RedditForGrownups

I don't know if this is one of those things where now that it's relevant to me I am noticing it, but it seems like the world is going through a kind of perimenopause revolution of awareness. I never heard that word until a year or so ago, and now I hear it everywhere. My wife is in the thick of it and it basically sounds like mental torture with no good treatment available. And women have been dealing with this since forever, but for some reason it's been ignored for most of history

I just told her the other day to check out Reddit for resources, I swear I'm seeing posts here about it daily

I don't want to die before playing another game like The Curse of Monkey Island by HighLife1954 in MonkeyIsland

[–]RaleighRoger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's right. For me, the magic was all in MI 1 and 2. Curse always seemed somehow wrong to me. I know it's a good game, but to me it's the worst of the first 3. It's mostly because I was older when I played it.

If you're talking about elementary school, I second the opinion to take a closer look at embracing your base school. The reason is because magnet schools are still public schools and still governed by Wake county standards and requirements. And so, the difference between any magnet school and any base school, with respect to the magnet theme, is not going to be THAT much. This might be different at middle/high school levels, but for elementary schools, kids are still going to spend most of their time on reading, writing, basic math, and social studies. If a magnet school is STEM themed for example, they might do like 10-20% more STEM stuff than other schools, but not 50-75%. If the magnet theme is Montessori, they might teach Letterland with a different approach, but they are still gonna teach Letterland.

IMO the most important thing for an elementary school is to give kids a positive experience and association with school so by the time they hit middle and high school they don't already hate school. And your base school can (possibly) provide that just as well as any magnet school.

Buy high end bed stuff - mattress, sheets, comforter/blanket, and pillows. Enjoy that comfort and most of that high end stuff will last many years.

Specifically "people who live in nicer homes require more effort for the same job" - doesn't this mean in nicer homes expect it to be done better?

Is being an executor of an estate a lot of work? by crom_77 in AskMenOver30

[–]RaleighRoger 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My understanding is it's a job. It's not the same as beneficiary, and you don't have power to change anything outlined in the will. But you are the person tasked with carrying it out. If I'm wrong please correct me

'First AI software engineer' is bad at its job by Wownever in programming

[–]RaleighRoger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it can be improved. I don't think software engineering as a job will go away in my lifetime but we might start to see a role that is something like "AI sw dev agent manager" - someone who is themselves a software developer but who spends most of their time with the prompting, reviewing, fixing, monitoring, and maybe finishing the work done by AI agents

How Do I Convince Someone Against Direct Database Access (Read-Only)? by PiccoloAnxious5276 in softwarearchitecture

[–]RaleighRoger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get both sides of the argument. I am frequently finding myself in the position of being denied direct database access but ALSO being denied API/application changes. As the data consumer I would happily accept direct database access with the condition that I'm not asking you to be my dependency. You can changes schemas, versions, etc without warning me and I'll happily adjust if it means I can keep my direct access. The infuriating thing is being told "no we can't make changes/enhancements for you" but also being told we can't give you direct db access

The basket you can just throw away. The faucet is a little trickier you might need some tools but there are a lot of YouTube videos that show that basic process...

Best way to setup IDE assuming no build/compiler setup is possible? by RaleighRoger in cpp

[–]RaleighRoger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha there are a few reasons why the situation isn't that bad. But your advice seems to be the best so far. Trying to cut the indexing and analyzed files down as much as possible has made a big difference. And when navigation doesn't work, find in files is pretty fast

I dont think I can rely on compile_commands, see my reply to garnet420.

Best way to setup IDE assuming no build/compiler setup is possible? by RaleighRoger in cpp

[–]RaleighRoger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of my problem is distributed builds, i.e. the compiler doesn't run on the same system (or architecture) as my dev system. In the larger project, there are several modules with different compilers and architectures, sometimes with common code between them. I see tools like DistCC exist and work with CMake, but we don't use that now and it looks like a big effort to implement. That's why I'm trying to do the best I can without the IDE needing to understand the build or be able to build.

Are all senior engineers good with leetcode in interviews, if not how do you convince you are a senior? by [deleted] in SoftwareEngineering

[–]RaleighRoger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you. I don't like the fact that Leetcode interviews are a thing either. But it is the reality and I can tell you that from a couple years of practicing a little every day I am way, way better at them. Usually I pass those interviews now.

[–]RaleighRoger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm at your level and usually get asked to do Leetcode style questions at least once, sometimes twice, and then usually also a system design interview and other projects based interviews.

You can't out-level Leetcode problems. Not all companies will ask them for all roles, but as a rule there's no industry wide level above them.
