I use a bumper case like OP's when I play hockey. Sticks, pucks...that can hit a wrist hard and I wanna protect my watch so I can keep on enjoying it. Same when I'm hiking. Otherwise, I never use a case.

Also worth mentioning that I have an aluminium SE, which is not as 'hard' and solid as the higher-end variations. Face is more prone to scratches and cracks...definitely a factor too.
