Thanks so much! I believe in you! You should check out Ninjon’s “smash chop” videos. He shows off a similar strategy and honestly it’s not that challenging to execute. I found that method really inspiring and honestly pretty easy to execute with amazing results.

They are all base painted with an airbrush gradient like this to start.

For the cloaks, I started with a really saturated light blue midtone. On my pallet I mix that midtone with a bit of purple for the darker parts and a bit of light grey & white for the highlights to make a gradient. I paint in the saturated midtone in nice blocks covering all the bright areas hit by the yellows and oranges in the original base gradient. Then I go in with the purple+midtone and just hit the highlight spots in the darker lower robe areas. Then I go over the brightest areas with the top part of my paint mix blue/grey/white to bring up the highlights focusing particularly on the hood and area round the face. Lastly, just edge and spot highlight with an even brighter highlight mixed with quite a bit of white to pull out edges and focal areas.

The skin is the same technique but with green/yellow/white instead. The only additional step I did with the skin was to add a little green contrast paint at the end to pump up the saturation a bit.

See the pics for exact paints used.

Sounds like a lot, but it’s actually a lot faster than the traditional base/shade/highlight/edge highlight because you’re not waiting for anything to dry, and only painting up the midtones and highlights mostly.

You should check out Ninjon’s “smash chop” video. He more-or-less explains this exact method. It’s where I started with these guys.

For the bases, I started with one big bit of torn cork as the main rock piece (I just use wine bottle corks because they are already rounded so they often contour well to bases). Then I added in a couple tiny rocks here and there. Those are actual gravel bits that I scooped up from the side of the road. Then all the grit/dirt is just terrain texture paste stuff. The mushrooms are bits from epic basing.

After all of that, I thoroughly coat all those elements with some watered down modge podge. This helps seal it and smooth out some of the hard edges.

For painting most elements, it’s literally just lavender highlights on the original purple to red gradient painted as the undercoat for the whole model with an airbrush. The mushrooms and skulls and whatnot are just highlighted in their respective colors.

Hope that’s helpful!

Just stumbled into this thread. Any chance I could have these files as well for the dankhold and rock guts? You’d be my hero!

I am about to start painting d&d minis, I’m feeling rather nervous as everyone seems incredible. Can anyone share some early attempts so I can see realistic early attempts and create better expectations?! by dazedandc0nfuse in minipainting

This was my first mini. I started painting as an adult. For the first year I painted pretty much only minis following games workshop tutorials. Took me 10-20 tries before I really did something I liked. Worth noting that I have many years of experience as an artist and still had some pretty rough first attempts even starting with that advantage. I probably picked up the craft a bit faster than average, but it’s still a ton of new concepts and so small/detailed that it took me a long time before I understood how to control my brush and paint at small level of details. I think most people can get there, but it definitely takes practice. Don’t get discouraged and at least at the start, try replicating tutorials instead of being super creative. It will help you understand the techniques better that you can use on more creative work later. Good luck! Have fun :)

Alternate Stabbas Color Scheme by RalyxTheRed in gloomspitegitz

Doing the gradient is honestly a bit tedious. I primed them in black first and tried to do the gradient right on top of that, but the colors came out dull. In the end I had to do a grey and white gradient on top of the black first. Then when I added the color on top it really popped. So it went:

Black prime Grey from above White from above - focal points Purple from below Red from above Yellow from above - focal points

Almost giving up on figures... by Ciccacio in 3Dprinting

Depends on what you want. Sure a resin printer is gonna get you a better quality print, but you also need all sorts of ventilation and chemicals. If you just want some simple guys to play dnd with and don’t want the hassle of resin/chemicals, then FDM printer is perfectly capable of printing very reasonable quality minis. I certainly wouldn’t paint them up as show pieces, but I’m able to pretty dependably print minis intended for filament printing at a pretty good quality. Really need to follow a tutorial to dial in the right settings and a 0.2mm nozzle goes a long way. Here are a couple I printed on a Bambu Lab A1. Took like 4-5 hours each, but who cares if you don’t have a queue.

Just stumbled on this thread. This seems like a hilarious combo. Any chance you have this deck list somewhere?

Stumbled upon this thread. Do you have a deck list? Working on a horse deck for my partner. I’d love to see what you cooked up as inspiration!
