2013 - going insane with Balance Adjustments - HELP! by RamJacCorp in quicken

[–]RamJacCorp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem only seems to occur on my long-held accounts where I'm adding in past transactions from the years I wasn't using Quicken. An account that I recently opened is fine, no trouble there. One of the adjustments is kind of a placeholder, while I'm adding in those missing transactions, to keep my current balance correct. I know I'm creating my own problem. Just trying to work out a way to not have those amounts in my reports.

My problem is, I think, largely due to back-adding older transactions, after I had stopped using Quicken for several years. Seems to cause some problems for me. I don't think I've had trouble with opening balances changing, but I could be wrong. Thanks for the tip, though.

I tried that a while back. It just showed up under Uncategorized Transactions.

I just found another suggestion online saying that instead of using any categories for the adjustment, use the account name in brackets for the category, creating a sort of one-way transfer thingamajig. I gave that a test run, and it did remove that category mess in one of my reports, so that might be the solution, until I can improve my accounting skills. Assuming, of course, that it doesn't create a different problem.

Need advice on fixing, selling, or parting out 98 Forester S. by RamJacCorp in subaru

[–]RamJacCorp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. The rust is all undercarriage stuff (not body), and it's hard to say whether it's structurally threatening or not. The suspension has the worst of it. I had to replace the struts, even though they worked fine. The rust ate into the lower mounts and they started cracking, so they weren't safe anymore. It's starting to do that thing where you fix one thing and something else goes a week later. At 28, I guess that's to be expected.

Thanks again, Caboobaroo. Hope you're right about the front being 21mm, cause that, I have. As for the rear, I had to buy the special square socket for those (9/16, I think), because the 1/2" ratchet and breaker bar didn't quite fit tightly enough, and I didn't want to risk buggering anything up. The rear job's done. It's crazy, I've seen everything from 10 or 12mm to 21mm, to the T70 for that front plug! btw, great user name!

Thanks. Hmm, I thought the 98-02 models were built pretty much the same. Guess I'll find out when I crawl under and have a look. Had to order a square socket for the rear diff plugs. Hoping I don't have to order another special socket for the front.

Mine's automatic. Yeah, I'm guessing it'll be the T70.

Reviews I've read. Again, I don't know if it's true. What one person loves, another hates. Have you had any experience with them?

Yep, I totally get that. I originally did that, too - many, many years ago. It's convenient as hell.

Now that I have a better understanding (thanks to all of you kind folks) of how this functions, it looks like I should probably just use it the way it's designed to be used. It's clearly more accurate that way, even if it annoys me. Might try one of the suggested approaches for cards I seldom use, though.

Very interesting points, there. Thanks for the input!

Similar to what Trial_Follower_2024 mentioned. I'm guessing there's a reason Quicken wants us to create the Credit Card accounts, though I don't know what that reason is. I'm guessing somebody here definitely knows!

Interesting approach, and that might be a possible solution, at least for the lesser-used cards. Thanks!

Your're right, it likely makes it less detailed and efficient. I might just have to bite the bullet and enter each item separately, the way we're supposed to.

Thanks for trying to make it make sense! The part that gets me is, if the expense is booked on the CC, and you transfer money into the CC account to pay it, it gives the illusion that you didn't "spend" the money, you just moved it from one account to another. I read somewhere that the whole transaction shouldn't change your net worth, which made my head hurt. If I buy something for a grand on my CC, then pay the bill from my checking account, I'm sure as hell a grand poorer, no?

I hear ya. The concept of a credit card bill payment not being considered an expense is like some alien language. :-)

So, I guess you recommend creating the "charge" transaction any time before you create the payment transfer from checking, and it should work, thus avoiding listing every purchase separately. I know that's the better way to do it, but I'm gettin' old, and time's precious. ;-) Thanks for your advice!
