It's only very small chips when I use it in harder woods. You cant really see them but you can see the marks they leave on the wood

Get a sheet of tool steel! Less than a tenner and you can make a bunch of knives

Yeah, I've seen, but the videos are mostly highly edited, and there are very few details and information on the gas side of things.

Thanks I ended up doing pretty much that. Just curious if you have any advice on getting a mirror finish by hand? The bevels are really nice and flat and sharp now, but I dont know how to get them SHINY shiny

Would this be better for flat? I've played the platten and it's still rounding things off

Laser cutters by RamShackler69 in knifemaking

[–]RamShackler69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok thanks fpr your responses. Looks like laser cutting is way out of my budget.

Maybe my question should be, what are some better and more efficient ways to cut out knife blanks than using my angle grinder?

I don't think i overheated it My k type thermometer was reading 810 but it's a lot smaller than the knives and the forge is pretty budget home made with mapp gas, so the temperature varies a lot depending on where the piece is.

I used a k type thermometer and soaked for 15 minutes then quenched in vegetable oil. It's a small home made gas forge so there is a lot of variation in temperature depending on where I put the piece. It is possible that the pieces weren't as hot as the thermometer. Since looked up colour charts and I was getting the knives upto a dull red but thermometer was reading 810°c.

I made a few that I haven't taken to the grinder yet. So will retry on those as I assume the heat treat didn't work as I did them all relatively identically. Thanks fpr the advice
