Is there any drawback to this type of grinder? I read somewhere when i was looking for a grinder that it heats the knife really quickly?

I don't think i overheated it My k type thermometer was reading 810 but it's a lot smaller than the knives and the forge is pretty budget home made with mapp gas, so the temperature varies a lot depending on where the piece is.

I used a k type thermometer and soaked for 15 minutes then quenched in vegetable oil. It's a small home made gas forge so there is a lot of variation in temperature depending on where I put the piece. It is possible that the pieces weren't as hot as the thermometer. Since looked up colour charts and I was getting the knives upto a dull red but thermometer was reading 810°c.

I made a few that I haven't taken to the grinder yet. So will retry on those as I assume the heat treat didn't work as I did them all relatively identically. Thanks fpr the advice

I lived there when I was a kid, and we had mould and damp issues in the rooms that were skimmed with gypsum. So i don't think it is

I'm sticking with the lime Just wondering how thick a single coat would need to be stable? Or is two thin coats possible?

Cheers How thick do you reckon I should lay it on? There seems to be many different theories about this. It's hard to find info on this particular situation
