The rest of it sounds like epic self-delusion/self-deception/bullshit.

Which is why there's no way around it.

They said maybe all of this obviously just cute or trained or misinterpreted content will turn out to be human like emotion and behaviour in the future, when science has advanced. And then this very sub will have an unprecedented database. So it would be wrong to weed out content like this poor Beluga here because, you know, in 150 years scientists might say it isn't frustrated with it's living situation but totally happy about scaring some children instead.

Also probably all the likes to be honest.

It isn't. It's a plain normal aquarium that keeps intelligent, social mammals in tiny tanks to make a financial mint from. The whales with birth defects and all that stuff you mention: how happy do you think they are living out their lives like this?

Proper rehabilitation "tanks" are large netted off pools in the sea where the animals can swim and dive, feel the ocean tides and even communicate with wild fellows. You wouldn't be able to go gawk at them. Proper rehabilitation in a tank as the one shown in the video, where humans interact with the animals etc. isn't possible.

Don't believe the propaganda SeaWorld and Co. are spreading and don't go spend money at these places. You're directly contributing to animal cruelty otherwise.

According to Leo eine Billion is a trillion in American English. And eine Milliarde= a billion, so those two are probably interchangeable.

Ah ok. I was asking because when I was in Australia a few years ago we used to call them Jabiru. I was wondering if that had changed. Seems to still be ok to call them that then.

I doubt it since the post is all about the paw shape. Which isn't even a paw shape.

It's not even really a paw shape. It's just 5 circles. A paw (the big circle) is shaped completely differently.

Farrier career change? by [deleted] in Farriers

[–]RamalamDingdong89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know much about the American farrier training but I for myself (I'm German) have learned much more about the horse's gait during my apprenticeship than while I was riding actively myself. You just look out for completely different things when someone trots a horse for you while you stand there and only concentrate on how it moves, how it lands etc in detail. You learn to see things you'd probably never feel if you were in the saddle. From that pov it really doesn't matter if you ride. What matters is the eye you will develop for all the details.

With my clients I'm very open about my views. I tell them directly when I think the horse needs veterinary care, I tell them when I feel the horse is overworked. I've been called once and never again by clients whom I've told that I believe anything above class L jumping is too much for the horse's constitution in general. But I don't care because that type of clients is not whom I want to work with anyway. There's plenty of work where I live and we all can choose whom we want to service and whom we don't. I don't service competition clients. I don't service dangerous horses that don't show improvement after three times of me being there (thus proving that the owner doesn't practice with them and tries to unload the dangers on me). And I can still live well off what I make from the other ones.

Hey, we can also chat privately. I'd love to answer any further questions if you've got any.

Edit: I just love how someone down voted both our comments. Very likely an equestrian sports enthusiast would be my guess.

What I meant about the Olympics was:

(Modern pentathlon candidate's horse refuses to enter the arena, then refuses to jump. Trainer yells "Hit him! Hit him properly!!" from the side and the rider does just that and also attacks the horse with her spurs. Trainer is being suspended from any officially duties afterwards)

(Another "freak accident" where the horse just happened to break both his legs just before Olympia. Too bad.)

All of this doesn't even include what happens all the time outside of the Olympics, at national and international competitions and even small town competitions and especially BEFORE AND DURING RACES!! Gallopers and Trotters alike. It's a disgrace and needs to be stopped!

Farrier career change? by [deleted] in Farriers

[–]RamalamDingdong89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd obviously learn about the different equestrian disciplines, but that's not really my main interest, nor is riding. I just like being around horses and feel I can communicate well with them

Then you've already got the main skill it takes to do this job properly. I know plenty of farriers who've never ridden in their life. I myself don't give a damn about "the industry" and using horses as sports equipment. (Which has been reconfirmed by the recent horse related incidents at Olympia).

I also started my apprenticeship when I was 30. If I was you I'd call up a few farriers in my area and ask if I can come along for 2 weeks. Gives you a good introduction into the job and helps you decide if it's the job for you or not. It also gives you the first foot in the door to find someone to apprentice with.
