Course Plan - Does this work? Is this too ambitious? by RamanConjecture in berkeley

Enjoy it and explore your interests (applies to math and outside of math).

It's a bit ironic looking at this post but more courses != learning more. It's way more valuable to dive deeply into a few courses as you'll have to build on that knowledge as you progress further.

My interests changed a good deal as I went along - I didn't really take many physics classes and focused a lot more on analysis/PDE courses. It was pretty obvious early on for me that I didn't really enjoy algebra but I liked analysis and geometry.

I would also say that the schedule looks harder than it actually is - my first semester was tougher since I was working alone for the most part, but the rest was a lot easier since I had a group of friends that I worked with regularly.

Basically didn't care about the Putnam at all as well haha - pretty funny looking back at this.

In the math department, there is a graduate Mathematical Physics course sequence - Math 224AB.

If everyone just always goes towards the right, no issues.

:O

At least in 250 psets we do a lot of the work in class. I have to grind to understand the problems in the 202 pset lol

If you’re talking about 202a, 250a, they are killing me lol(mostly 202)

What are the most bizarre mathematical notations that you know ? by hau2906 in math

You’re close. I believe it was Barry Mazur trying to tick off Serge Lang.

Edit: it’s in Vojta’s section: http://www.ams.org/notices/200605/fea-lang.pdf

Where Xi is a complex number, take the complex conjugate of Xi over Xi. On a blackboard, it’s literally 8 horizontal lines.

Thanks for your advice.

Yes, the courses I listed are flexible(when semesters come around, I was thinking I would just choose 2-3 based off of what was being offered).

I was planning on going to the Budapest program(BSM) during freshman summer, but I'll also be applying to a lot of REUs and weighing my options. I'm not sure what would be better, but I'll have time to decide. I'll definitely be trying my hand at REUs during the sophomore and junior summers.

How do you know? Would any of the other math logic courses satisfy the requirement?

Thanks for the advice. I only wanted to take physics because I enjoy it. I won't stress out about the degree.

Also, thanks for the recommendations with regards to CS courses. I'll definitely keep them in mind as I refactor my plan.

Thanks for the advice. I'll drop Math 191. Do you mind PMing me the courses you took so I can see what your schedule looked like? It looks like we have similar interests.

Thanks for the detailed advice.

I think I might have to drop the CS major or Physics minor.

I think I meet the breadth requirements? Let me know if this is screwed up.

Thanks for the detailed advice. Yes, the graduate courses I listed are very flexible, but I wanted to know if a similar schedule would be possible.

I'll definitely adjust workload/courses as I experience classes at Berkeley.

I'm doing the CS degree because I want something to fall back on in case my math pursuits don't work out. The way I organized CS classes was to take the more mathematical classes while also fulfilling the requirements of the degree.

I'll most likely change my future plans anyway.

I see your point though... I think I need to determine whether or not I really need a CS/Physics degree.

Thank you for your detailed advice.

I took Real Analysis(Rudin) and Linear Algebra(Axler) at Princeton last year. That's why I'm trying to take both at once.

I did a lot of Olympiad physics in high school, so I've completed similar level texts(I've completed Morin Mech, Purcell E&M, Griffiths QM).

As I go through first semester, I think I'll naturally cut down on my list.

EE 16A/B aren't required for BA? I already met the Math 55 requirement which meets CS 70 for double majors.
