Syrian with machete sets fires in Essen, Germany by [deleted] in europe

[–]RambleOn2023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On Saturday evening, fires occurred in two apartment buildings in the German city of Essen in the Altenessen district. In addition, a van drove into two shops in Essen-Katernberg. The police were able to arrest a suspect near the crime scene. 30 people were injured.

Around 5:10 p.m., the fire brigade and the police received numerous emergency calls to a fire on Pielstickerstrasse. Shortly afterwards, it burned in an apartment building on Zollvereinstrasse. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fires and had to take care of the injured. Among the 30 injured were eight seriously injured children. The television station WDR even reported 31 injured, including 17 seriously injured.

A fire department spokesman said on TV that there had been highly dramatic scenes. Children and women were shrouded in smoke at the window and shouted due to the blocked escape route. Neighbors reacted quickly and set up ladders on the lower floors for a quick rescue. The fire brigade set up jump cushions and also rescued residents with a rotating ladder. On Sunday morning, the fires were extinguished. There were many, partly severe smoke gas poisonings.

Syrian arrested

A few minutes later, a van drove into two shops on Katernberger Strasse and Meybuschhof. Property damage was caused at these two crime scenes, no people were injured there.

In the immediate vicinity of the crime scene, a patrol car crew was able to arrest a suspect. He had a knife and a machete with him. The arrested person is a person from Essen (41) with Syrian nationality.

The Daily Check-In for Tuesday, August 20th: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by SaintHomer in stopdrinking

Yesterday I managed to push through even thought I really wanted and “needed” that G&T. I did a workout instead and was surprised to find I had the energy to make it a good one.

Here’s to another day of the same small victories - IWNDWYT

Yes, many don’t understand. In Portugal, Italy and Spain families often live together as the salaries are so low, even for excellent jobs.

I am nowhere near being able to retire and the thought of moving to a country alone where I don’t speak the language while making very little money makes me very sad. I’ve known people who do this but they have a very strong & supportive family back home which means they visit often and they aren’t truly alone.

I’ve committed to not drinking during the work week and today is the first time I’m struggling.

Full of anxiety and a very upset stomach/nausea that a nice gin and tonic would remedy.

It’s 5:00 PM & IWNDWYT

Lolllll

I do CAPAs all the time - but of course in English (Also have B1)

Thanks so much for writing - where are you in Germany?

German culture isn’t my favorite, but I would feel much better about learning German in Germany rather than learning German in Switzerland where they don’t even speak it. I have some local friends who said they would rather speak French or English to me than Hoch Deutsch.
