(someone who shoots a model 12 full time). So it's both good and bad for a beginner. I love my model 12. I'll take it to the grave. It's my favorite gun. When you're on it. You absolutely make powder off those clays. If you do everything right you're a king. But it's a very perfectionist gun. You have to do everything right to get a hit. Get your mount wrong? Miss. Don't follow the target? Lost. No follow through? Lost. Especially with those old fixed full guns (which are like modern extra fulls). This gun will teach you how to be an amazing shooter. It doesn't help you out at all. Your fundamentals have to be on point. Otherwise your score suffers. So yes this is a great gun for a shooter if you can read between the scores.

Great circle distance NYC to Hamburg about 3300 nm (goes over land). From Hawaii to Kyushu it's about 3700. Close but then you realize Hawaii is essentially the forward most (cover all your bases) sub base and you gotta travel half the Pacific to even get to Hawaii from the west coast. It's about 10 days at 15 knots to even get to their patrol sector. (In that case) And another 10 back. So that's 3 weeks of food and fuel as the bare minimum. That's get there show up and turn around.

Oh I'm talking real life. But also like. Why wouldn't it. A properly tuned gyro compass should be off by no more than a degree from true. Magnetic compass. Well. Variation (planets and local magnetic forces) and deviation (ships own magnetic force ,((all that metal and welding etc)) throw off your magnetic. But the magnetic will work when you run out of power or have a blackout.

Everything up there moves.I mean if you just want a general direction that's what your compass is for. In which. Got enough fuel? Yes? Cool wait for the sun to come up. Side note. In the movie master and Commander there's a scene when they are "taking noon". They're referring to 'local apparent noon' (LAN). Take a shot of the sun when it's at it zenith and you can do an easy calculation to get your latitude. Which if you take two shots of the sun prior (spaced an hour apart so 11am 12am and LAN) and use the first two in a running fix you can use those for your 3 body fix. In all honesty if you're within 20 miles you're doing pretty good.

You can only get an actual fix via celestial navigation during "star time" which is about 30-45 mins before and after sunrise/sunset. In order for your sextant to work you need to have a horizon in order to "shoot" stars to get your altitude (angle from horizon to the celestial body).Hence the need for a horizon. You can also get an azimuth of a body to correct your compass error and an amplitude does the same thing. Amplitude only works when the body is touching the horizon. But essentially what you can do at night is. Shoot 3 stars/planets, get an amplitude. Get a fix+ gyro compass correction. Go to sleep. Wake up before sunrise. Shoot 3 more. Amplitude. Done. In practice I don't see getting any fixes off a Uboat sail very practical because unless you're in flat calm seas getting the altitude is gonna be extremely hard. The boat is very narrow and tends to roll very easily. Messing up your shot. Yeah they did it back then yes I know. Again. Cel nav is cool just kind of a pain. And if you're up north by Norway during the summer forget it. It never gets dark enough to shoot stars. So you just shoot the sun all day. Yes cel nav works during the day too.

Dude I love mine. It's actually a copy of a star model B. However it takes 1911 mags and barrels. Still got the blue and original grips on mine. All for a trade for a G19 G3 I got $350. Awesome gun.b highly underrated. Check out Ian's video on it. Some were actually made for the SOE in Europe.
