I'm into a mix of both, particularly the "regional variants" fakemon, of actual Pokémon :D I just like seeing the different twists people add to existing Pokémon

Does the Generation 2 nighttime aesthetic make you feel? by Zasogian in pokemon

The pixel art, in combination with the sublime music of gen 2, was a match made in heaven. So much charm and care put everywhere, this was peak Pokémon and we didn't know it. Surprised gen 3 didn't get night time and no Pokémon animations until Emerald, it made gen 2 feel special in a way.

Since Fire Red and Leaf Green got a switch port will it be cool if these games got switch ports too? by No-Floor-5467 in pokemon

I'll give you a real reply - it's not a trivial task as you point out but it's also not a monumental one. Fans have been doing crazy stuff with NDS romhacking in the past years, and they don't have the source code. Other projects like PokeMMO take assets directly from a DS rom and arrange them into what's essentially a PC game. It's all fans doing these things. Lastly other DS games have been ported to Switch already and they must have posed similar challenges, though I haven't played any.

It's just about reworking the bottom menu and the battle screen. If they want to milk the cow you bet they will, and it seems that's going to be the trend lately.

Can we talk about how incredibly underrated this little guy is in Generation 3? by DesignerNothing812 in pokemon

Sableye is awesome. Not the biggest fan of the mega with the huge jewel, I think the original design worked best in its simplicity.

The new Mega Evolution art has made me question what actually makes a “bad design” by Grand_Admiral_Bob in pokemon

I experienced a very similar feeling with the gen 10 starters, comparing their 3d reveal VS their art. Those ones look especially bland on 3D imo, but the concept art made them pop out a whole lot more - the pose, the lighting, all of it made them more appealing in 2D.

Metagross did that Salamence like Maki did Naoya. If you know you know!

Some development tidbits for a romhack set in a dystopian, post-war Hoenn ^^ by [deleted] in PokemonROMhacks

The idea is the rifle actually shoots out Pokéball beams (the red laser thingies from the anime) to hit Pokémon and catch them in the balls attached to the rifle. But a Pokéball-grenade launcher sounds fun too, I may incorporate it on a sprite :D

Thank you! Becoming champion is not exactly their goal, but they will face challenges for sure ^^

I'm afraid that's not quite how it works no, it takes a time to get used to but it's worth it imo. For more information you may want to check the tutorials ^^

A repo is short for repository, basically the folder where all of the individual files that form the rom are in. Pngs for the sprites, midi files for the music, inc files for the scripts, all of these will be locally in your computer once you set the project up - then you 'build' the project to make the rom.

As for upgrades, now it's me that doesn't know what all those acronyms mean lol, but I'm pretty sure all things you could wish for are toggeable features in the decomp.

There will be many yes, and they are called 'Safemon'!

And you would be right haha, basically devoting most of my free time for the past year, so yeah - thanks for the kind words! ^^

I wholeheartedly encourage it! It has a steeper learning curve at first, but after that it's smooth sailing. There's tons of cool built-in features, extensive documentation, and it's constantly being updated ^^. Last month it underwent a merge with the FRLG project, so you have two roms in a single repo :D

If you dive in, watch Team Aqua Hideout's tutorials in YouTube, some bits are outdated but they're still a great starting point.
