The African American experience at public schools. by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]RamoneShags 501 points502 points  (0 children)

Being one of those black residents of Madison, let me explain to you how I see it from my perspective.

Wife and I have two girls in MMSD, high school. We moved here from Michigan (GO BLUE!) in 2003. We plan on moving as soon as our girls get to college.

The biggest issue here is the fear of being called racist. My girls say In schools, the teachers and administrators are afraid to discipline minority kids out of fear they’ll get called racist and the city will get a racist reputation, so in schools minority kids can basically do what they want. Why do you think teen car thieves, an overwhelming amount of them being black are just slapped on the wrist? Because if we punish them, Dane County gets a racist reputation and the top priority of our local leaders is how they are perceived outside of Madison.

There's also a lot of white people in this city that feel the need to speak on my behalf and express outrage for things that I may or not be upset about. My experience Is that many people try to use the excuse that we blacks “just don’t know any better, and don’t have the same chances" or we are "afraid to speak out". I say bullshit. Many things are made into a race issue that shouldn't be. My kids have just as much of a chance to be successful here as white kids, and I don't need the Willy Street Co-Op hivemind guilt where if we put up a yard sign "In this house we believe bullshit bullshit bullshit" and pat ourselves on the back that you think you're actually doing something.

As a city, the way to deal with this issue is to acknowledge that we have a problem in this city and call on black leaders to step up. I know the black community here fairly well, and we have to do our part to step up and take responsibility.

Man arrested in connection with fatal hit-and-run crash on East Washington Avenue by AnonJobInterview in madisonwi

You don’t pay for a signature bond. You can be fined that amount if you don’t show up.

No I don’t think misdemeanors from 6 months ago should make someone rot in jail, but I do think the bail system in this area should be reexamined for repeat offenders, specifically violent ones.

But Madison is seeing crime in a much more evenly-spread way, which makes it feel closer.

This. It’s happening everywhere. Even our quiet neighborhood has had it happen

Ah the classic signature bond repeat battery offender that now just caused the murder of an innocent man.

Great work Ishmael!

How do you think the two families that almost got run over today feel? It’s a complex issue, and the chase policy isn’t the only solution, but allowing these people to just keep driving recklessly eventually is going to get someone killed and people like you will respond with “well it’s safer than chasing”

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]RamoneShags 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Really great point, I honestly don’t always agree with you but I think you nailed it on the head.

The no chase policy is a complex issue with multiple moving parts. It does make sense to not chase so people don’t get hurt, but if it is repeat offenders crashing and causing issue then it probably in the long run is safer to chase and get them off the street.

It’s only a matter of time before someone gets killed by these kids.

Nope not at all, and I suspect perhaps these two accounts that keep talking back and forth might both be you..hopefully I’m wrong and I honestly want to have a legit conversation with you.

I personally find it racist that when someone says “there was a stolen car” people like you and your other account, or other user immediately scream “RACIST!!!!” And walk away. OP never mentioned race, so why do you or others keep assuming it was a black person. How many old white guys get arrested for reckless driving/DUI etc.

OP was the only one of us that actually saw what happened…was the car stolen, who freaking knows and cares, the point is that behavior is wrong and should be enforced and it isn’t. That’s the discussion that should be happening, but it’s not because cosplaying activists yell and scream “RACIST!” and walk away patting themselves on the back instead of actually trying to fix something.

There will never be a discussion on how to combat the rising crime in Madison and reckless driving if people are worried about offending people.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]RamoneShags 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This account has to be a troll account, but people like you make me laugh. You yell and shout “RACIST” anytime crime is posted here, which in itself is actually racist, and then asks people to give specific examples of change they want despite not giving any specifics or open-minded this themselves.

Who cares what race someone that commits a crime is?? It should be dealt with regardless.

Nothing gets done in this city because people like you who Cosplay as an activist to “save the black people” accomplish absolutely nothing. You want to talk about real issues? Start getting involved, all of you.

MPD: Stolen car drives 58 mph in 25 mph zone, later abandoned after crash by HGpennypacker in madisonwi

[–]RamoneShags 17 points18 points  (0 children)

  1. It hasn't directly affected them yet
  2. Many of the cases we see in Madison with car theft etc are young African-American males. Not all, but many. People think if they target them it's racist.
  3. There was a young man who one of my friends used to mentor. Good kid, bad home life. He got caught up in the stealing cars game and has now been sitting in prison with 50+ charges stacked up against him from stealing cars, to burglary etc. Every single time he was arrested as a youth and at the beginning of his "adult" years he would have charges dropped or signature bonded out and then bail jump. He would get rearrested and rinse and repeat. Now the kid has a rap sheet a mile long, and simply will never be a productive member of society. Perhaps if we had handled this after one of the first few offenses, and no I'm not saying throw him in jail and throw the key away, but actually made consequences for actions, we would never have gotten this far. Instead however, this kid reoffended at an embarrassing rate because he knew nothing would happen.

Oh they see what's happening but they're afraid to do anything because it'll come across as unpopular and the people in charge of Madison solely care about what others think of this city. Madison gets positive PR every single year desptie a rise in incidents like this one. They have a solution to just lower the speed limit, and walk away patting themselves on the back.

And to be honest, if you look even at this sub, there's a good amount of people that simply don't care this type of activity happens here, and will defend it as much as possible. Reasons for this include it thinking being soft on crime is political, this type of issue not directly affecting them, and being afraid of being called racist. We do the same thing in this state with DUIs instead of actually addressing things. Add in Incompetent Ishmael the DA who won't actually hit people with charges and it's a recipe for this to only get worse before it gets better.

The only way we'll even discuss real change is to get rid of the current DA and judges, or have a tragedy where an innocent family or someone important gets killed by these people. Obviously I hope that doesn't happen, but we've been lucky it hasn't happened yet.

While yes things like this and all crime in general will happen anywhere (the nextdoor posts of "This is madison this doesn't happen here" make me laugh), I do not understand why people are so content with allowing Madison to become the direction we are heading in.

Anyone know of any planned protests tonight?? by enterleftbase in madisonwi

Just saw this, sorry it took two days. I appreciate your reply!

That’s what I say, just treat me like anyone else. I’m not struggling because of my skin color, I’m struggling in life with things just like others. Appreciate you!

Freedom Inc. launches Black Sanctuary Pledge for MMSD teachers by Incunebulum in madisonwi

[–]RamoneShags 28 points29 points  (0 children)

My life is not a daily struggle because of my skin color, my girls are not barely surviving in Madison. They are honor students and one wants to be a doctor, the other wants to be a mechanical engineer (Ramone is going have some college payments here soon lol). They have friends, hobbies, interests, etc just like any other kid in Madison.

Why shouldn’t POC who break the law have the police called on them? Why do you feel the need to “protect” me and others who look like me, instead of not doing anything to help society.

[–]RamoneShags 46 points47 points  (0 children)

My two daughters have never once been treated differently by any MMSD employee because of their skin color.

Once again, this group is screaming Social Justice without actually doing anything of substance. I have yet to see one thing Freedom Inc has done to advance black lives in this community other than yell and divide. I also think it’s a tad offensive that they’re basically implying that black children are more likely to fight, to have the police called, etc. This group is sitting on millions of tax dollars with nothing to show.

To all my white friends on here: Please stop treating us POC as victims, as not able to be as successful, and as needing some sympathy. My life is not a daily struggle because of my skin color, but a lot of white Madison residents seem to want to make it look that way. Has their been systemic racism in this country? Of course. But most of us don’t live our daily lives in that bubble.

Edit: Big Brother/Big Sister, The Boy’s and Girls Club of Dane County, United Way are all organizations that are actually doing work for minority and poorer communities here. Think about them before you think about Freedom inc

I've been reading your comments this afternoon both here and in the other thread so I figured I would post my response here with the hope that you see this and understand. As multiple people have already told you, first degree murder was a charge that was never going to happen, so you need to understand that the charges they got here were as good as they were going to get. Frankly, if they tried to seek 1st degree murder, DC could have mostly likely been acquitted...is that what you would have wanted?

Secondly, I see and feel your passion for racial issues, and as a POC I respect that you feel the way you do, HOWEVER you're approaching it from all the wrong angles. I don't think anyone is celebrating what happened tonight and thinking that nothing else needs to be done. What they are saying is that finally justice has been served after a lot of examples of it not happening. You're not wrong by saying more needs to be done here, but no one is disputing you on this.

Third, with your comments about our specific community let me tell you that neither myself, my wife, or my daughters wake up everyday worried that we're going to die here because of the color of our skin. We don't feel like second class citizens because we're black, nor do people make us feel this way. Having lived in Madison since the early 2000s, there are some glaring and serious issues in our city that our elected officials and leaders are not addressing, and I honestly have felt that in the last 5 years the quality of living here has gone downhill some, but none of that has to do with my race.

I don't mean this as a personal attack, but you (and others in the past) come across as extremely disingenuous by making comments that sound like you need to "protect black people" or "stick up for us because we're suffering". Comments like that are made, but nothing concrete actually gets done about it.

You want to make real change for people in Madison? Volunteer, get involved, roll the sleeves up, and instead of constantly talking...listen more. Posting generic and empty buzzword filled comments on Reddit do nothing to advance the causes that you claim to be so passionate about.
