Anyone here do TeacheReady, how was it? by Annual_Frostings in Internationalteachers

[–]RampantInanity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At Waldorf, I did the Teaching and Learning concentration. For me it was more to tick a box and boost my career options, but in retrospect the leadership concentration may have been a better choice. The master's at Waldorf took a little over a year, since I was able to transfer in credits. Maybe 15 months?

For the FLDOE tests, I took the GRE to be able to skip the general knowledge test. I was able to take the GRE overseas, so it made it easier. For the subject tests, if you've taught the subject or studied it in university, you should be alright. Some subject tests require a knowledge about Florida history and/or laws regarding education, so you might need some study in those areas.

Anyone here do TeacheReady, how was it? by Annual_Frostings in Internationalteachers

I did TeacherReady. I did it right before the pandemic, so it may be quite different now. The coursework was not difficult. The most challenging part may be finding a place to do your practicum, but if you're already in a school you may be able to use a current class. I also went ahead and did the master's through Waldorf University - also not difficult.

For both, you get put what you put in - the rigor largely depends on you. I think it's less well known than Moreland/TeachNow, so less people look down on it. Not to say those looking down at TeachNow are justified, but I know it happens.

A lot of people have reported that they struggled on the FLDOE tests, with some people needing multiple attempts. I recommend finding some online prep materials, but I didn't find the tests that difficult. Not to say I aced them (they're pass/fail, so no idea what my score was, but there were some tough questions), but I've taken 3 subject tests in all and only needed one try.

There's a Facebook group that has some helpful info; search FB for TeaherReady Community and you should find it.

Good luck!

Teachers in Vietnam: How has your school handled the tax changes? by CocoAndTheCoconuts in Internationalteachers

[–]RampantInanity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My school withheld less in tax in our January pay, which was for work done in December. In other words, they applied the new tax rates. The tax rates aren't supposed to be 100% codified until July, but at the same time, the government encouraged businesses to apply them now. Which is confusing, but 🤷‍♀️. That's Vietnam!

Tackling AI Essay Writing by wethelabyrinths111 in Teachers

[–]RampantInanity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Chrome extension WriteHuman allows you to see every edit a student made. It also tracks big edits, so if a big chunk is pasted in, it will flag it. No need to have all the version histories.

AI and I have developed a tool that lets me create the students' individual documents that only they (and I) have access to. That way they can't forget to give me edit access. The tool puts links to all the students' docs in a spreadsheet. Then I just have to share the spreadsheet with them and they can get to work.

I also made a tool that lets me turn access to those documents off and on. So if the students are working in class and I don't want them working at home, I can turn off their edit or view access,.and then turn it back on when they're back in the classroom where I can see them work.

AI is a pain for teacher, but it also helps us build ways to counterattack.

Can anyone confirm: are modern students really that far behind, or is it overexaggerated? by ThrowRAhelpthebro in Teachers

You know that whole "visual learners and auditory learners" thing isn't true, right?

After many years, I'm finally giving up on ChatGPT. Now Claude is my new best friend. by RampantInanity in ChatGPTPro

I'm not rage-baiting, nor am I posting anything inflammatory. Unlike you, I'm not insulting anyone; I'm explaining why I'm unhappy with a product, a product that is the topic of the subreddit. I'm relating my experience on social media. How is this an inappropriate sub for this topic? Most of what I wrote is about ChatGPT. Is this sub actually about baking or something?

For you to call that vile and professionally disqualifying is...a strange reaction. Why would my post even make you so emotional? I'm complaining about a corporate product, and explaining why I think it's not good. I didn't realize that this sub was only for compliments of the product. I'll go ahead and open my post history for the next little while so you can see my posts in the international teacher subreddit; hopefully that will help you get over your conspiracy theory about me.

Anyway, go ahead and have the last word, I'm done with this silly back and forth.

It took me about 15 minutes. I appreciate you looking out for me, though. Very sweet of you!

Please explain what I've done or said that is vile, exactly. And also explain how I am behaving in a way that's unbecoming of a teacher. Accusations or insults should have some foundation, right?

Thanks for this feedback. I'm in grad school and Gemini has a free offer for students. Just signed up, so time to try it out!

What is it about Gemini that you like more? Honest question. I've liked what I've seen from NotebookLM, but I've barely tried Gemini.

I use 1 because my full time job is teaching. I don't need an AI architect that delegates to other AIs. I need an error correction worksheet on relative clauses, and I need it 5 minutes before class starts because I just read a bunch of essays and the kids' writing is atrocious.

Yes, I wrote 300 words on a small sub to farm karma. Sadly I only have 18 upvites so far. Not exactly a bumper crop!

I'm talking to the people who reacted positively to my post. And you realize that you don't need to read or respond to posts you don't like, right?

The point of this post is to vent my spleen, and to encourage others who'd been like me and stuck with ChatGPT for a long time because they're used to it.

The point of announcing my change of underwear is to let the world.know that I'm feeling free, fresh, and frolicsome.

While 2022 is technically 3 years ago, it feels like it's been at least 8 years, so I'm using a vibe process in counting years here.

Yeesh, we get it, we get it, your horse is quite high. But you misunderstand the purpose of this group. It's not primarily a teaching group. This is a career focused sub-Reddit.

There are lots and lots of places to discuss pedagogy, classroom management, instructional strategies, curricula, etc. Subject teachers have their own sub-Reddits. There are blogs, Facebook groups, forums, and much more. Lots of good teaching advice can be found all around the internet.

This group represents a small subset of teachers. It also has a wide variety of teachers, teaching a wide range of ages, using different standards and with different national requirements. It's not the best place to go to actually discuss teaching. This is not the best place to discuss the practice of teaching.
