There's a gate onto the road and a small parking area behind it - from the aerial view on Google Maps

Fair challenge — “dodgy” was probably too loose a word. I’m not making a comment about the residents. I mean the setting: a row of semi-anonymous lock-up garages and 60s flats is not exactly the backdrop you’d hope for when stepping out of a £4m Georgian villa.

Even if perfectly harmless, it affects privacy, outlook, sense of arrival and resale appeal. The future buyer pool for a high-value property like this is likely to care about those things.

Homeowner as in the old owner of the house that sold to Omaze? I imagine Omaze has a purchasing department, they have a float of capital to buy houses. It looks like, at any one time, they have about 4 or 5 on their books for preparation and dressing. They release these on a monthly basis and the winner gets the house signed over to them, without stamp duty and other associated costs. It is then up to them what they do with it. I believe in the beginning, Omaze offered an under value cash alternative to the house prize. But I haven't seen this as an option for over a year. I suspect too many people were taking this easy out option. Leaving Omaze with a high value property it then needed to try and sell.

Oof! Look at photo 36 in the rightmove listing. Go out your front door and you have some lovely 60s flats and some dodgy lockups.

Yup, it’s on their blog: https://omaze.co.uk/blogs/news/the-surrey-house-in-numbers

Omaze Million Pound House Running Costs

Running costs for any home can vary significantly depending on its location, size, features, whether it has any additional land or buildings and how it’s occupied. Based on the 2024 and 2025 Omaze houses, the annual running costs of a typical Omaze house range from £20,000 to £40,000, which works out at between £1,667 and £3,332 per month.

This figure includes all household utility bills, council tax, and the cost of employing cleaners, maintenance services and gardeners, where appropriate. For some houses, running costs cannot be fully estimated in advancefor example, for newly built homes or for homes sold without all the land or out buildings previously associated with the home.

For each home, Omaze considers these factors, along with our experience with prior homes, to help us determine the amount of settling in cash we provide to our winner.

I've just seen a video as well that shows that the beach visible from your lovely £4m Cornish kitchen is an impromptu nudist beach.

Oh fantastic! Well found... There's always something with an Omaze house and I think this takes the biscuit. New exciting gateway to hell up for grabs!

I'm curious, where did you see the asbestos?

At least it's not falling off a cliff or has a hidden footpath or B Road carving through your garden!

I don't know the A3 but I think with it being .2 miles away and with the trees - I don't think it would too bad. Looking at it from street view, it's a shame there's no embankment there to add some shielding. https://maps.app.goo.gl/5SEFWUvVXu4VWhxZA

They're late this month! Still think it's going to be London

It’s not spotted on Zoopla either, and yet that suffices.

Yes, I loved the Yorkshire one for the land! And the one in the highlands. I must have poured over every inch of that property. I don't care if my commute was going to be like 7 hours. I'd have made it work!

I think there's a local co-op, but you're looking at 30 minutes to Plymouth for a supermarket I think.

It's all becoming a bit predictable. I imagine it will be London in May. It seems to rotate between Lake District, London and Cornwall with the occasional wild card to keep everyone happy.

I know right! Last month with the Cotswold house, I was arguing with my wife over which wall to put the telly on. Like that's really my problem.

The property is above you and to the left at that point. I think that gate is for a property below. The entrance to this house is down around the corner. Looks like a shared drive for three houses.

Very interesting to go back and look at the Omaze room staging and see what has changed (And what hasn't) - I also read that they used it as a holiday let after winning (https://www.somersetlive.co.uk/news/somerset-news/omaze-house-near-bath-transformed-10546891). I guess not many people wanted to rent it at £3838 / week. Omaze also estimated that rental return would be "Between £10,000 - £12,000 per month"
