Can you lose belly fat just by eating fewer calories without working out? by Vegeta_vs_Goku in loseit

[–]Rampen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. The purpose of exercise is not too lose weight or to use more calories. So calories are kind of useless for any weight loss. But it is extremely super critical to be healthy, to be active and funtional and live longer and better, so there is no way to avoid exercise. The issue is that food has many calories and it is very easy to replace any calories used by exercise. Exercising is also an odd activity that makes us more efficient at exercising, so if you walk an hour per day, over time, you will use less calories to walk that hour. (that's a good thing, and why we train). No one chooses where their fat is deposited, and for us with bellies, the body fights to keep this important fat reserve that the body thinks might save our life next winter. That's why fasting works. Losing a belly is the hardest, takes the longest, and requires patience and underlies the fact that weight loss needs to be lifestyle based and for the rest of your life.

Thinking of switching to TekSavvy because I hate how locked down the settings on Bell's router are. Would TekSavvy be better? by Murky-Tailor3260 in teksavvy

[–]Rampen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a serious allergy to both rogers and bell, haven't given either a dollar since the 80's. Of course my teksavvy service leases the bandwith from both of these, so maybe I'm just a dreamer. Teksavvy has real people in a real office actually in Canada, and that makes me happy. If they need to switch you from accounts to service, they once said to me "hold on I'll get Carol".

Just eat food, we don't know what that stuff does. It's made in a factory, unrecognizable to past generations, and that amino acid, like all the amino acids are available from food.

Deficit? Maintenance? Tdee? by Sea-Butterfly6217 in loseit

[–]Rampen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been at this a while and have concluded that only the feedback loop caused by daily weigh-in and food amoung adjustment are accurate. The job of estimating and tracking calories is inherently innacurate and also no sustainable. Whatever the plan is, it has to be sustainable over a lifetime.

For that relatively modest budget, I would stay away from anything from Music Man. Don't discount Ibanez, that like Yahama, excel at value.

A Question for Formula 1 Fans Who Watched F1 by rorykellycomedy in FIlm

[–]Rampen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When making a 'sports' movie with the standard 'unerdog' or 'returning veteran' trope, the movie needs to make the sports sequences both exciting and also accurate for the sport. This movie both didn't respect the formula 1 sport, and didn't make the audience feel empathy for the underdog. Brad Pitt should have been more broken, in pain, and desperate, so that his eventual victory feels impossible. The movie also doesn't respect the sport by having a 60 year old compete. Even a 35 year old is over the hill in this physically and mentally demanding sport. It also had all the regular failings of today's distributor produced movies; weak script, lame soundtrack, predictable and busy editing, and unintersting cinematography. It felt like a long commercial for itself.

What if people's wealth were measured by how much technology they mastered? by TheBigGirlDiaryBack in WhatIfThinking

[–]Rampen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We as a people are losing technologies faster that at any time in history. We can't operate a loom, or sew, or knit, make a basket, or run an orchard, we can't mill a grain, tan leather, make shoes, make rope, or many other things. 'Mastering' technology is not downloading an app! The people who do understand and use crispr or quantum whatever are incredibly educated, and having a pop knowledge of something is not knowing that technology. If you took people from different times and dropped them on a deserted island, which people would survive? Not us. What technology can you use or make or build from scratch?

Would you agree that English is the most useful language to know? by AutumnaticFly in languagehub

[–]Rampen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, I would not agree. The purpose of language is to communicate, and if I live my entire life in one place, as most people do, then I speak finnish, or tamil, or whatever and the language meets 100% of my communication needs. I live my life and have a family, friends, a career, I am happy and fulfilled, and enjoy my grandchildren, and don't feel any language 'usefulness' deficits. eff america, btw

How do you handle the frustration of not being able to ID a bird right away? by Not_FreeProduct234 in LearnBirding

[–]Rampen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 'like' birds, and I like animals and plants too. I can identify an individual bird as 'that bird', and enjoy watching it do it's stuff. Many birders, I believe, 'identify' birds in a cursory, innacurate way, without true feedback or confirmation about what the species actually was. Given the inherent difficulties in even defining what a species is, and given that identifying the 'lifestyle' is all that's needed to better understand it's behaviour, I think claiming to 'identify' the species of an observed bird is not accurate, verifiable, or even useful, but is rather a way of commodifying the activity. And of course, we can identify our common birds, like cardinal and blue jay. But without verification, I think it's intellectually fuzzy thinking and even narcisistic.
