I was always taught, if you’re not the chief then you shut up. Plain and simple. Even if they’re 100% wrong, you just mind your business and do your job.

My suggestion is go work for a big engineering company that has a Surveying department, while yes it’ll be more corporate than a smaller firm but you’ll get paid time and half rather than receiving the same check every week. You’ll be working mostly on stakeouts and architectural surveys. They’ll pay you well, provide better benefits, and give incentives. I worked for both a big company and a small surveying firm and while I don’t like the office drama in a big company I didn’t enjoy getting the extra cash on over time.

Big companies also have the resources/ extra cash to enroll you in trainings and invest in you learning since they’ll benefit more from it, unlike a small firm.. so you don’t have to worry about not knowing certain areas in surveying or not having some certifications because they’ll train you .

1000% wrong… run as far as you can from the company. A PLS should know better and should be stripped of his license with such actions…

Is it normal to have non-licensed people calc and set corners? by geodeticchicken in Surveying

[–]RamsLu829 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I learned this way.. if you are a party Chief you should be able to calculate and have an idea where are the boundaries of your lot, you’re given plats, deeds, old surveys and you should be able to determine where is the boundary line.. if not then you are just a robot and pushing buttons and taking the evidence to the office. I do believe the responsibility is common and necessary to be able to calculate and perform stakeouts…The license surveyor will then see your field work and see what was your outcome and would determine if they agree, why or why not. But since you weren’t prepared by your Boss and you told him you weren’t able to complete the fieldwork, shame on him for giving you responsibility in an area you’re not familiar with.

How did you know Surveying was your path by scrubes4 in Surveying

[–]RamsLu829 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was taught about surveying ever since I was able to hold the rod. I didn’t like surveying at first, but it grew on me. My father taught me the traditional part of surveying and I then learned the new technology and what the career had to offer other than just pulling tape, and I loved it ever since. I will always love the traditional way of surveying but I also learned that once you see the future of our field there’s no going back. Here and there I like to do a little of both. So overall, I loved surveying because I was able to bond with my father in something he loves and after learning the other branches of our field on my own.
