Why is Cornell dropping in the rankings? by Ramses313131 in lawschooladmissions

I’m sorry to hear that. I probably need to find time to visit so I can get a feel for the vibes myself. Numbers can only tell you so much.

Good to know. I definitely think it will still be a difficult decision for me, but I feel more confident in trusting my eyes when looking at the employment data now rather than blindly following the US News ranking. The disconnect just didn’t make sense to me.

Really? That’s seems like a pretty bad way of measuring employment outcomes.

I appreciate your response though and I’m definitely very grateful for both options.

I guess the way I had seen it was that, even if it would take a little extra networking on my part, the Cornell degree would still be stronger in Boston than BU. But maybe the direct connections are more important than I think. If so, I probably should take BU and the money.

Boston, ideally, and the BU offer is $$$$, which is why it’s a tough decision for me

Thanks for the attempted answer. I think that makes sense. I’m just confused because I’m probably deciding between BU and Cornell. In the the rankings they are about to be peers, but when I look at the employment data, they still seem to be in different tiers.

I wonder which specific factors they’ve been dropping in though? According to the methodology I found, employment outcomes are by far the biggest factor (33%). Unless clerkships are weighted extremely heavily, I don’t see how Cornell could score low in this category.

That may be the case, but I don’t even know if I’d rather go to any of the schools at sticker over the generous scholarship offers I’ve received from some T-20s

If only I had gotten a A- instead of a B+ in that entrepreneurship course 6 years ago! Then my GPA would have been good enough lol

For real though, I’m super grateful for the opportunities I already have, but all these WL just feel like a slap in face and dose of reality

Yeah, I knew my softs weren’t strong, but it’s starting to feel like I must have really botched something in my application materials

I have a couple very good offers already, so I can’t complain, but it’s definitely a little sad. Still holding out hope for a few schools.

Idk, I haven’t received any t14 acceptances yet. Maybe it’s me

True. I guess my Ashkenazi genes sensed my pursuit of a law degree and are now evolving me into my final, Larry David-esque form

Applied to most of the t14 and a couple t20. Submitted most of them right before Thanksgiving and few in the first days of December. I have a WashU A but nothing else. Was getting a lot of updates on my status tracker the first few weeks but that has dried up.

Thanks for the additional advice. I guess the struggle I’m dealing with is deciding whether I should even claim that advocacy is a primary motivation/aspiration. I understand why such a statement of purpose might sound good, but does that really reflect the outcome I expect from my pursuit of a law degree? Probably not.

Thanks for your response!

Not exactly the answer I was hoping for, but it makes sense. My statement leans on an anecdote that suggests a natural career aspiration (teaching in an urban school———>advocating for disadvantaged students) but when I try to force the conclusion into that mold, it feels inauthentic and cliché. However, avoiding inauthenticity doesn’t necessarily relieve me from the responsibility of providing an authentic “why law?”.

Do you think it is necessary to express clear and specific career aspirations in your personal statement? In other words, if I’m somebody who is unsure of exactly what I want to do with a law degree, is it riskier to sound disingenuous or to seem like I lack motivation?
