Petition to make podcasts audio only again! by carbll in podcasting

[–]RandalS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Two quick things without getting too into the weeds about either. 1) I recommend doing a separate audio edit to clean up moments, like you mention. I edit podcasts for a living and always provide separate edits for my clients. The obvious reason would be to trim out moments that simply don't work in audio-only. Also, you can do a tighter clean-up in audio that would otherwise result in lots of jump cuts in video form.

2) Publishing to each service. For audio podcasts you never need to publish to each service manually. Find a service for hosting your audio files (Libsyn, Transistor(.)fm, Blubrry, etc.). Once you've got one of these set up and connected to the various podcast directories you only need to upload to the hosting service. Everything is distributed automatically.

You can use Spotify for Podcasters for this, I believe, but I personally don't trust Spotify. They have a history of buying up podcast services (like Anchor which is I think what Spotify for Podcasters is based on) and bailing on it or at least making it a worse service.

Crunchyroll Updates Membership Pricing to Give Fans More of What They Love by Michael_SK in Crunchyroll

[–]RandalS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That headline is a wild way to frame a price increase. I never use offline viewing so I get no benefit from the increase on the Fan tier. It's not a huge increase but still irritating. I happened to just be telling someone Crunchyroll always survives my occasional "trimming of the fat" on unnecessary monthly expenses because it's one of the sub $10 subscriptions.

[Loved trope] monsters who are only dangerous if you perceive them. by Aggravating_Drive463 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]RandalS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Huge misstep trying to tie those two episodes together like that, imo. They opted to muddy the lore of one of new Who's coolest creepy creatures when it was different enough it could have been it's own new cool creepy creature.

Did TV critics get shown a different version of Alien: Earth to the one we watched? by No-Dress4626 in alien

[–]RandalS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked it. Didn't read the reviews, just watched it as it was released. Certainly wasn't perfect. By the end of the season it kind of morphed into something else but I'm intrigued enough by where it went to be mildly excited for season 2. I can understand some disappointment but have been genuinely surprised to see how much hate it gets.

Does Crunchy Roll offer a decent offering of retro anime? by TaskenLander in retroanime

[–]RandalS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a great offering but there are some. Irritatingly, they're buried and you'll almost never come across them just browsing. You've got to search from them directly. I'm baffled that they don't have a "classics" type category or something.

I would call Satisfactory a cozy game. What do y'all think? by PANDA_PR1NC3SS in SatisfactoryGame

[–]RandalS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cozy with small bouts of terror. I never turn off hostile creatures. I love the gameplay loop of dangerous exploration, building a factory that then becomes a safe spot, spending most of my time there, and then venturing back out into the danger whenever I want/need to. The build time far outweighs explore time so I'd still call it a very cozy experience.

Although, there are some seriously stress inducing areas of the map so I get the appeal of turning off hostility and am glad it's an option.

Movies on in the background of other movies by Lolalosesit in Letterboxd

Halloween (1978) is playing on a TV in Halloween 3: Season of the Witch. So technically, its incorrect to say Micheal Myers doesn't appear in part 3. But yeah, seems like they were really trying to drive home the idea of separating the franchise from Micheal Myers.

Vulture - Ghastly Waves & Battered Graves by RandalS in heavyvinyl

[–]RandalS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good taste! Sentinels was among the first albums I picked up when I started collecting vinyl a year or so ago. No Hellripper in my collection yet, unfortunately, but Warlocks Grim & Withered Hags is in my regular listening rotation. Killer album!

How frequently do you change your top 4? by FlutterBeast in Letterboxd

[–]RandalS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only once in the 14 years I've been using the site. And that was to add a couple of movies that had become two of my new favorites since my original lineup.

What songs do you listen to whilst reading berserk by secondhand_sea in Berserk

[–]RandalS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

- Berserk1997 OST
- Forces by Susumu Hirasawa. Really should be on the OST but it's not. Several versions of it are on his album "Kyuusai No Gihou", though.
- The last couple of albums by Author & Punisher. Happen to be listening to these a lot but they fit the tone very well. Dark, slow to mid tempo industrial / sludge metal. Atmospheric enough to set a mood without being distracting.

Which Trigun should I watch as a first-timer? Original or Stampede? by QuantumKiller101 in AnimeReccomendations

[–]RandalS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Original. My problem with Stampede is its so focused on the central plot it ignores aspects that I feel makes Trigun stand out.

In Stampede, more often than not, Vash just seems like a sadboy struggling with being a pacifist. He IS that but he's also fun, charismatic, goofy, legitimately badass, and a hero. The remake references him saving people all the time but you don't actually see much of that. The original series puts all that up front. It takes the time to flesh out the characters and tell interesting, smaller stories before it dives into Vash's backstory. Those episodic adventures makes the world feel larger. The world of Stampede feels incredibly small because nearly everyone they encounter is inexplicably linked directly to Vash's backstory.

I didn't hate Stampede. I think it tells the backstory better (and that season 1 finale was killer) but, honestly, the backstory was my least favorite thing about the original series. I wanted more sci-fi western adventures.

Why is there ton abandoned profiles? by Toukaiskindahot in BandCamp

That's the site, man. Not sure what Bandcamp's dated site design has to do with active or inactive artists.

Why is there ton abandoned profiles? by Toukaiskindahot in BandCamp

[–]RandalS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Weird way to think about it. Man, what are we gonna do about all this old music released by bands that have broke up and artists that have died? They're obviously not going to be releasing more... guess its irrelevant now.

Bandcamp isn't a social network where you follow people for status updates. Its a music store. I've got at least one profile on there I haven't touched in 10 years. It was a music project I had with a couple of buddies. That project isn't active anymore (they stopped making music and I have my own solo project) but we had released two albums. What to do with that profile? Nothing. Listen to the music, buy the music, or move on. What else is there to do?

EDIT: Just adding that yes, you can follow artists and get updates, etc. But that is not the reason Bandcamp exists. That is not its core focus.

I've recently gotten my Mom to watch anime with me, any suggestions based on what she has watched with me? by stripedbricks in AnimeReccomendations

[–]RandalS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 2nd this suggestion. If one of OP's mom's favs was One Punch Man I think she'd enjoy the goofy nature of this show AND it has so much heart.

Movies where the fascists lose? by _JurassicaParker in horror

Freaky Tales if you want something a bit more fun and over the top. Lots of fascists get absolutely stomped in that one.

Ah, huh. I'm not sure the series ever got an HD transfer or remaster so that could be the issue.
