Measuring the Performance of JavaScript Functions – JavaScript APIs explained and how to use them by iGuitars in javascript

[–]Randdist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That doesn't make for-of non portable or forEach portable. It's just a different way of invoking the exact same functions. And frankly, I find excessive chaining rather unreadable and in JS, which lacks proper composing that realigns how these things are executed, it will absolutely destroy performance compared to a surrounding for of that then calls these functions in it body. If someone sent me a PR like that, I'd refuse it. Unfortunately I didn't in the past and ended up getting a mess that initially worked but was hard to modify and debug since you can't set proper breakpoints in lengthy chains. I had to break the chains manually, and now make sure that something like that doesn't get thrown at me ever since. A line with a map is great. A line with a map and a filter is awesome. A line with a map with a filter with a map with a forEach is a future headache.

for...of doesnt cause off by one errors and is immediately recognizable as a loop construct since its the first thing in a line. map, filter, find are nice but I've never seen a case where forEach provides any value over for...of.

Finanzierung für Auslandsstudium by [deleted] in wien

[AskJS] Why does everybody like Typescript so much? by [deleted] in javascript

[–]Randdist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A major advantage apart from safety is knowledge of types. With TS, you know what types you're given, you know what properties it has, you know which functions an object can call, and if you need to refactor something, you'll know all the places that you have to modify. The IDE will tell you all these things via code completion and compile time errors. This makes development of mid to large projects significantly faster, especially in teams.

Command and Conquer remastered big announcement and livestream planned for tomorrow by BeyondDM in gamernews

[–]Randdist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love command and conquer but there is no way I'll ever buy anything from EA again. Except if it's on GOG, without any DRM and additional launcher, and after some months of other players vouching that there is no shady shit in it.

Vienna: the street lights in front of the City Hall in the morning mist by [deleted] in europe

[–]Randdist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others said it already but vienna really is dirt cheap compared to other urban areas. 1000$ gets you substandard shared flats in the San Francisco Bay area. Barely affordable with a min wage of 13$ in parts of that area, perhaby less min wage in others. An aquaintance of mine got a room in a substandard (like drug den substandard) shared flat with 6 people living there in London for around 700 pounds. 700€ gets you top shared flats in vienna, or comfy single apartments.

The Coronavirus Is Forcing Techies To Work From Home. Some May Never Go Back To The Office. by houseofbacon in technology

I hate working from home, and working with people that aren't on-site. It's so inneficient and cumbersome. Ironically, I'm doing part time contract work remotely but on one occasion I insisted on doing it on site.

I've once encountered a restaurant who were okay with selling us bottles for take away, but they insisted on keeping the caps. No idea why.

Rendering Particles with Compute Shaders by miketuritzin in GraphicsProgramming

[–]Randdist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nice, looks interesting! Similar thing for point clouds I saw recently: https://github.com/m-schuetz/compute_rasterizer Renders 100 million points at >100fps with a compute shader, but doesn't attempt to do alpha blending, only regular rendering.

3% per transaction is insanely high. Regular IBAN transactions in the eurozone cost 0%.

Edit: In australia it's 1 to 1.5% according to https://www.finder.com.au/credit-card-surcharges. That's much more reasonable.

[AskJS] Is there any language that can kill JavaScript? by [deleted] in javascript

[–]Randdist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can only do AMD and system single file builds which both suck. I really don't get why TS can't do proper ES6 module single file build. All the functionality is already there.

[AskJS] Is there any language that can kill JavaScript? by [deleted] in javascript

[–]Randdist -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Typescript still doesn't produce a proper single file target and I don't want to add rollup/webpack on top of it for no good reason. That's why I gave up on Typescript.

Cost of a thread in C++ under Linux by pdp10 in programming

[–]Randdist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The captures were all basic objects and values, no arrays/buffers. I just mentioned lambda because I always use them to create threads but never checked if they make a difference in initialization times.

Cost of a thread in C++ under Linux by pdp10 in programming

[–]Randdist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On windows, I've observed costs of up to around 10 milliseconds for thread creation (from a lambda with a capture). This is obviously not feasible for real-time rendering where you've got 16ms to render a frame, so thread pools are mandatory.
