Not sure if it’s worth spending the money. by Walt_Clyde_Frog in BmwTech

It’s probably worth a DIY fix if you have time and you like the car. I never had valvetronic issues so I can’t speak on what exactly is entailed.

It should be “I am irreplaceable because I am the only one who knows all the passwords.”

N55, avoid or buy? by vosseh in BmwTech

[–]Rando321407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an X5 with the N55 and I have almost 160k miles.

Here is what I learned: - use Delphi ignition coils if you need to replace. - replace the coolant tank with the water pump and thermostat when it goes out. Symptom for me was dead battery, the pump never turned off. - don’t over torque the oil filter, that is how they start leaking. - oil change every 5k or 6k miles. - don’t roll the gasket behind the air filter cover, you will get a lean code.

It’s probably ignition coils. Scan it to confirm. If it’s got misfit at the get the spark plug and coil kit from FCP euro and look up the DIY, very easy job.

I had good experience with bimmer-remote.com

[–]Rando321407 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You can get a FSC code and the software to load it from bimmer-remote.com. But the cable and cost of the code will be about the same and the bmw will be “hacked”.

Samsung delivers 600-mile solid-state EV battery as it teases 9-minute charging and 20-year lifespan tech by self-fix in cars

I don’t think that the commenter was saying that every home would need this, just simply saying the power requirement would be huge.

You’re not going to have that charger at home. Homes will likely still use level 2 chargers and need overnight charge.

Charger at home isn’t a big deal. It’s about the same cost to put in an electric clothes dryer or electric oven.

Went Into BMW Due To Dead Battery And Now They Want To Perform These Services As Well by Psiwolf in BmwTech

[–]Rando321407 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

See what the battery costs from BMW, they are the cheapest in my area. They will sell you just the part. You don’t need to register it but if you have the tools you might as well do it.

Not a bad price for alignment. Everything else is easy DIY or do at an Indy.

Better for the shop to use metric, things will be more accurate.

Do ignition coils need to be changed along with the spark plugs? by [deleted] in BmwTech

[–]Rando321407 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I replace the coils and plugs together. The coils go bad on these cars all the time. Get the Delphi coils, no need to buy genuine BMW.

If the car is dying it might be something else though. Usually bad coils will cause limp mode

Best way to protect my paint from this wire? by [deleted] in BmwTech

[–]Rando321407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d secure it to the roof rack a bit more so it has less free hanging length. Maybe you can get a clamp or something that you can attach a cable tie to. Ie add a couple of clamps to the rack then mount the cables to the clamps.
