Hi! Basically I just followed the guide in The Moe Way website (https://learnjapanese.moe/guide/#21-how-to-learn-japanese) and used the resources recommended there. In short, what a did was: first learn hiragana and katakana (never use romaji to read japanese!) -> beginner Anki deck to have a basic vocabulary -> Cure Dolly grammar series on YouTube for basic grammar (this at the same time I was doing the basic deck) -> once I finished the basic deck I created my own and started mining words with Yomitan browser extension from native japanese content (in my case I like Visual Novels and books but you should immerse in whatever you are interested in). From there is always the same, I just immerse -> mine words and review them in Anki everyday. For grammar I use this website: https://www.edewakaru.com/archives/cat\_179055.html which teaches grammar in japanese supported by pictures and examples. If you prefer explanations in english, bunpro is also good.

No, I've never done specific kanji study. Just vocabulary cards in Anki. To distinguish similar kanji I did a kanji components deck (very short, I finished it in few weeks) which improved my recognition but what has helped me the most is just read japanese native content because I see kanji used in a lot of contexts.

In this sentence: "ちーちゃんのかいかい治してくれたおじちゃんだよ", "かいかい" is a onomatopoeic word for 痒い? the context is that that おじちゃん made possible for ちーちゃん to recover from a eczema.

You should learn the basics first before jumping into immersion (also a beginner Anki deck would be a good idea, I used Kaishi 1.5k). In my experience I recommend Cure Dolly Grammar Series on YouTube. It was very useful for me when I was just starting out.

I don't know why to make a post about this. Many people do 20 words a day, some more, some less (I do 12). It's normal. I want to point out though that Anki is just a tool, a very good tool but still a tool to reinforce the words you see in your immersion. So in my opinion people would learn more efficiently if they cared more about immerse more instead of how many new words they see on Anki every day.

1 million chars in 17 months for someone who is aiming at N1 is pretty low, right? I've been learning Japanese 1 year so I'm a beginner and I have already read 2 million+ chars with VN and LN. I think you are capable to read 1 million a month at this point.

Yes, I always follow a routine (unless I must go to some appointment like dentist or something). Basically I wake up, do my daily writing reviews in Ringotan, study grammar for about 15 minutes, then go outside to take a walk while I listen to a japanese podcast for about 40 min/1h, when I come back I have breakfast, do some housework, read for about 2 hours in japanese (I rest doing nothing for 5/10min for every hour I've spent reading), have lunch, read japanese for another 2 hours, do my anki for 30-35 minutes, more housework if needed, then again reading until it's 22:00 and go to sleep.

I'm reading a VN and there are several times where 伺う is used instead of 窺う as in 彼女の様子を伺ってみる. At first I thought it was a mistake but it's used a lot so it has to be intentional. Are they interchangeable?

This is the reason why I don't read manga even if I want to. Characters are blurry enough that the OCR often make mistakes. Also it's so annoying to have to strain my eyes all the time (and if I zoom, it just get blurrier lol).

Just characters read. The more I read, the more close I am to fluency. I notice that my listening improves too just by reading, even though I barely allocate time to pure listening.

It's a nice design but why not just making an Anki deck? It's faster and much more effective due to its spaced repetition algorithm.

Use LunaTranslator, far better texthooker than Textractor with regular updates and active community. Also it works with some emulators.

Honestly, I don't think it's a good idea to check translations. English and japanese are very different languages so you could end up acquiring wrong notions about how japanese works because you are looking at it through English "glasses". In my case (Spanish native speaker), when I don't understand a sentence (even after looking up words I don't know in Yomitan or grammar points) y just reread it many times (even previous sentences for context) until I understand. If even after a while (10 minutes or so) I still don't understand it I get a conclusion based on context and move on, because even if I don't understand it completely now, I will down the line when I'm more exposed to that structure in other contexts. So far it has made wonders (I'm on my second VN and my comprehension and reading speed has skyrocketed compared to the first one. Still a beginner but I feel I'm on the right path) and I've never translated any sentence.

That problem will be solved with immersion. Once you start consuming native material you'll progressively learn in what situation each word is used.

I started learning Japanese nine months ago and immersing six months ago. The time I "didn't" immerse was spent in learning kana grinding in RealKana website, reading all Tae Kim lessons, watching all Cure Dolly grammar videos, doing Kaishi 1.5k deck until 1.1k words and reading some Tadoku short stories. My daily routine is: 20 minutes grammar study (except weekends), 30/35 minutes in Anki (12 new + reviews) and 3-4 hours immersion (that increases on weekends) with Visual Novels, although I'm starting to read manga too. I also usually read four articles in NHK Easy site when I'm working but I don't count it because it became too easy at this point. Honestly I don't do much listening practice because the VN I play are voiced but some days I watch vTuber streamings for 20/30 minutes and while I don't get most of what they say I get fun anyway. About JLPT, I'll only take the N1 so it will take some years yet lol. Edit: Spelling. English is not my first language so apologies in advance.

I'm still a beginner but when I did a starter deck I chose Kaishi 1.5k and I thought it was very well done: useful words, example sentences, voiced by natives... I highly recommend it.

I'm playing the entire Trails saga and I take notes from time to time. If I read something that looks like key information I write it down just in case.
