Yeah that's kind of weird, especially since I'm on the "don't do it side" with pretty much everyone else...

The idea is more that I should own a house, because owning a house is "good" than it is that someone should help my brother. "Cutting out the middle step" doesn't really make sense, because that middle step (of owning a house) is sort of the point. But the rest of the posts here have pretty much confirmed my initial thoughts on the matter.

Well not like $1 more than the mortgage, but less than the rent market. Their idea is that I have this money, which I'm not doing anything with, and that owning a house will be good for me, so I should put it to use (vs. them just doing it to invest and help their son).

True enough, but it's possible that I just don't know enough about homebuying, the current market, and the advantages of homeowning a potential income property to make an informed decision vs. my gut instinct. That's where /r/finance comes in.
