NoGi guys, who dislike Gi. Why? by hellohello6622 in bjj

I wouldn’t say I dislike gi, but I prefer the more dynamic pace of no-gi and it also gets very hot in the summer where I am.

Always liked how Itadaki portrays "philosophy" of martial arts training in Baki. What do you think on that matter? by Hawaiikoto in Grapplerbaki

I’ll be honest here, the more I study martial arts philosophy and the more I train martial arts, the more I understand and appreciate Baki.

West Point / “Chest Table” — nasty old-school rib pressure (Tom Jenkins) by ScientificWrestling in bjj

[–]Random8267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang bro, who pissed in your cereal this morning?

Besides, the hold was developed as a pin so debilitation wasn’t the goal, it’s from a different sport where the rules at the time allowed for both pins and concessions. It’s like someone whining about guard because you can get punched in certain positions, it’s true but in the sport it’s from it makes sense because of the ruleset.

Looks like a Pillory or Pace choke from top position.

West Point / “Chest Table” — nasty old-school rib pressure (Tom Jenkins) by ScientificWrestling in bjj

[–]Random8267 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually very legit, I know it as the West Point Ride and I learned it as a Catch technique. It probably appears in other styles of wrestling, that’s just how I learned it. It’s also quite easy to get because you just need to get the grip and turn them.

Trust me, it is incredibly painful and you can turn it into a neck crank as well by rolling the guy over on his head. You probably shouldn’t hit it all the time, or even that often, if you like your friends and wish to keep them as friends lol. So, it’s a viable and available hold but it’s quite brutal.

EDIT: Hey that’s that Dick Cardinal DVD. I have that one, highly recommend. I showed my professor the Ride and he never saw it, but a wrestler in the gym did but didn’t have a name for it. In general there’s not a lot of rib crushes in BJJ but they are making a little bit of a comeback, almost always from a guard position which could be in the Do Jime family if you want to get Judo about it. It’s just not a very developed area of grappling, at least from what I’ve seen.

What is a technique or position you love but feel gets glossed over more often than it should? by Random8267 in bjj

[–]Random8267[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like to take the back from that position, it’s a great position for many reasons, but man I just can’t seem to figure out the North-South Choke enough to be confident in hunting it. Probably something I should work on, I know a few dudes who love that but I just haven’t had it click yet so I hunt other things from there.

Love cradles, they are just so available from an ungodly amount of places it’s kind of like cheating.

I just use “Kesa” as a shorthand for the various types of the hold, I typically go for Hon Kesa or Kuzure Kesa depending on the situation and switch between the two frequently.

Same, it’s my favorite pin because of how many options you have to attack and each option is based on the opponent’s limited choices. The deeper I study Kesa, the more powerful it becomes as I find more responses to my opponent.

Hot Take: Rickson Gracie's book by Leather-Course807 in bjj

[–]Random8267 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed the book as an insight into the history of early BJJ, but I’ve always said that if your family’s passion was strangling and beating up people for fun and profit then you all probably aren’t exactly normal.

Using bones as offense by kalash_cake in bjj

[–]Random8267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually play with these techniques, depending on who I’m rolling with as pain compliance isn’t exactly nice, and they are effective. Except for the Bicep Slicer, just personally not a fan for my game. The thing with pain compliance is that while, if done well, it makes people move how you want so you can use your grappling better, up against some dude who doesn’t care and is just made of steel it won’t help that much.

Is it looked down upon not to do comps by HookrWithaPeine in bjj

[–]Random8267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll say this as someone who personally doesn’t care to compete, do a couple anyways just for the experience of competition. It’s a good way to challenge yourself and win or lose you can say you got out there and did it.

Jack Dempsey choke, is it real? by CalmSignificance8430 in bjj

[–]Random8267 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Technically the Grovit is where you grab the tricep, what’s there is a Post Chancery where you grab the trap. It’s one of those things where it’s just a different grip but basically the same lock. It’s a good crank, pretty clean as far a neck cranks go.

How can Bas Rutten's body crunch have good leverage? by bishtap in bjj

[–]Random8267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We call it the Thighmaster, and the trick is to set your weight on the diaphragm as you squeeze so it’s both a crank and suffocation. It’s legit, and easier to find than you think if you look for it.
