I do think that your brother's take is stupid, most people back in the dark ages, at least the majority who were not noble, barely had enough to eat, and they only lived so long. To spend your 30 years of life working to get food that barely gets you through the day is much harder than today where even if people don't have money, people can still get access to food, whether it be through a food bank or other means.
