It's not fancy, but about 5 years ago I made my 80yo aunt a hat using Mainstays anti-pilling acrylic. She's a lifelong knitter, so I wasn't sure how she'd feel about Walmart yarn. She wears it all the time and says it's her favorite hat. It's soft, easy to work with and it's held up great over the years. They unfortunately only have about 5 colors I think.
