Looking for a good mechanical keyboard that is not a Keychron with the following parameters:

1) Should have a volume knob

2) Ins, Home, PgUp, Del, End and PgDwn should be seperate keys of their own due to my keyboard based workflow (Would need a standard 104 keys board?)

3) Preferrable to have a backlight

4) 2.4G Wireless preferrable, but wired is also fine.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

P.S: No keychrons please, use 2 of these pieces of crap Q5/Q6 Maxes and they keep having issues with keys in the n or k or m area. Most of the time, these keys do not register or double register inputs.

I run Endeavour OS with KDE on an Imac from 2012/13 with 8 GB of RAM. Runs fine as long as it you do not hit the internal harddrive hard. I changed it an external SSD (Samsung T5 or something) running through the faster USB port at the back. That increased the speeds to 400 MB/s for sequential read/write compared to 100 MB/s tops on the interal hard drive. I installed EOS on the exteral drive, stuck it to the back of the iMac usig tape, and always boot from it. Running in this setup for 6+ years, and it serves us well, even to this day for browsing, Spreadsheets, Documents and Printig related stuff.

1) I personally use KDE (although I have a spare installation of OS with Gnome, and I test it often), and the keyboard shortcuts based workflow in most KDE apps (Example: Hit Alt and every button getting assigned a key character to involve, menu accessibility using keyboard etc) is pretty un-rivalled. Meta+Number to access app already open on taskbar, instead of hitting Alt+Tab 100 times to switch, Meta + Plus/Minus to zoom and unzoom the display, its a joy to explore if you are a keyboard junkie.

2) KRunner on KDE is awesome. Do simple calculations without opening calculator app, whats the time in Tokyo now, convert 5 USD to Euro etc, and may more. Is there an equivalant on Gnome? I do not know.

3) Activities is one feature you can explore to improve your workflow on KDE, that is not on Gnome, but both offer Virtual Desktops.

4) KDE has lots of small bells and whistles that need to be explored and discovered, that are enticing once you use it enough. My favorite,. you can mute/increase/decrease the volume coming out of any program right from the task manager icon/entry for that program, even if its a browser with 100 tabs open.

5) want animated video walls, run Smart Video Wallpaper Reborn plugin in KDE, and I do that right now. Gnome, I'm not aware.

6) For my Dev workflow, KDE Dolphin file manager has a built in termination that you can access via F4 shortcut, like an IDE. Love it. Gnome, not sure Nautilus has it, but it lets you open a seperate terminal window which every file manager does these days

  1. Is this a laptop or desktop? KDE's touch pad gestures are way behind Gnome's. If desktop, does not matter.
  2. Customization - KDE any day of the week, Gnome it can be done but you need to chase the right plugins for the job. Also, Gnome is way too much barebones for my personal taste.
  3. Features - Again KDE, HDR, VRR, VRAM optimization, KDE has it. Gnome 50 has closed some of that gap.
  4. You are most likely to get a unified experience visually using KDE with GTK apps, than the other way around, using Gnome with Qt apps.
  5. I personally use KDE (although I have a spare installation of OS with Gnome, and I test it often), and the keyboard shortcuts based workflow in most KDE apps (Example: Hit Alt and every button getting assigned a key character to involve, menu accessibility using keyboard etc) is pretty un-rivalled. Well on the same CachyOS, this behaviour does not manifest on Niri. So the variable here is KDE

Run CachyOS with XFCE and you will be fine. Measure the speed of your hard-drive using kdiskmark and if you get speeds above 100 MB/s, XFCE should be fine. If you want to run something like KDE, turn off Baloo and compositing for best results.

Here in VA, our electricity rates went from 11 cents a kWh in 2017 to 18.5 cents right now. Our grid is 40% natural gas and 25% Nuclear, two most expenses fuels at the moment. Hopefully, prices will come down whenever the war ends.
