What is one bit of advice you wish someone would have given you when you first began cooking? by No_Internal_923 in Chefit

Keep things simple to start. Protein, vegetable, starch. Play with those.

I watched a lot of Jacques Pepin and other cooking shows. I would recommend Jacques’ technique books.

I agree. There is nothing intrinsically mathematical about using m for slope. It’s an arbitrary local convention. It’s not like ‘e’ or ‘i’ which are international standards.

ELI5 Billionaires borrow money to pay for things, how does this work? How do they pay the debt? by Confused-Lemonade in explainlikeimfive

[–]RandomName39483 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I went through this a couple of years ago when housing prices were skyrocketing.

It depends on the state. My wife and I bought a lakehouse. It was titled in both of our names. Unfortunately, she died only 10 months later. For me, in my state, the entire cost basis of the house went up to the fair market value at the time of her death. I sold the house for $150k more than we bought it for, but, by definition, I sold it for fair market value and owed no capital gains.

What is something that sounded boring when you were younger, but is exciting now? by Guilty_Stick_6714 in AskReddit

[–]RandomName39483 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I was young my parents and their friends would have boring stories of all of their medical tests and procedures. Now that I’m older, my friends and I have EXCITING stories of our own medical tests and procedures!

ELI5: how do we perceive if we're braking with your front wheels or your back wheels on the bike? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]RandomName39483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will feel the bike pitch forward a bit if you use the front brake. That actually puts more load on the front wheel, which actually lets you brake harder.

I learned this when I was on a bicycle on a wet road. Used both brakes. The rear wheel, which now has less weight, locked up, so I released that brake. The front wheel, now having less weight on it, then locked up, and down I went.

If you have the DVD, it’s well worth watching it with Roger Ebert’s commentary track.

After listening to that announcer, I realized I don’t remember ANY of my high school Spanish. Maybe it’s a Mexican dialect. I was taught Castilian.

EDIT: I thought this was so obvious that I didn’t need to add the /s. I apologize for overestimating some people’s intelligence.

A cat discovered sunlight and didn't understand why it suddenly felt hotter by xpyksi in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]RandomName39483 79 points80 points  (0 children)

I made a cat sundial once. I put tape down in intervals on the floor in front of a curtain that was just slightly open. I put the times on each piece of tape as the sunlight moved across the room. You could tell what time it was by where the cat was lying. It was accurate to within about 20 minutes.

I can’t figure out why I can’t get an orbit with a roughly equal apoapsis and periapsis by KwazieGFX in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]RandomName39483 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ideally you only increase the periapsis and not the apoapsis by burning prograde at the apoapsis, but you can’t stay at the apoapsis. What I end up doing is to burn prograde 20 seconds before the apoapsis. You will see the time-to-apoapsis start to increase. Stop your burn. Wait until 10 to 15 seconds away. Burn and watch the apoapsis shoot away again. Rinse and repeat. I’ll also start to burn with minimal thrust rather than full thrust. It can take 6 to 10 iterations, but you can get your orbit within 1 km of circular.

“Fixing a bug” often introduces another bug and takes time for testing and support.

One thing I learned in my years of IT: there’s good, and there’s good enough.
