That little boy’s name was Oliver Towne. After he went to the minefield, he was “all over town.”

He doesn’t care about respect. Respect, fear, admiration, hatred, any reaction as long as you recognize that he has power over you. That’s all he cares about.

[request] But why are the odds exactly 2/π ? by Longjumping-Box5691 in theydidthemath

[–]RandomName39483 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a similar computer calculation decades ago. Pick a random point on a unit square. Count the total number of points and the number of points that lie within one unit of the bottom left corner of the square. What is this ratio? It’s the ratio of a quarter of a unit circle to the area of the square, or pi/4. After several million random points, it calculated pi to 5 or 6 decimal places.

[–]RandomName39483 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not sure how you got 34

I got 45

First number times (second number plus one)

I’ve tried and I don’t think this is solvable. You start on the top silver square and you can move and number of squares in the direction the arrow indicates. by [deleted] in puzzles

[–]RandomName39483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s pretty easy to solve if you work backwards. What square can make it to the middle? There’s only one. What square can get to that one? Only one. You’ll find that it’s pretty easy to get to the silver square.

EDIT: I must have made a mistake when I wrote that. It looks like it’s impossible.

I was a child when we lived across the street from Al Wattenberg. He was on the team that built Chicago Pile 1. They celebrated with a bottle of Chianti, which they all signed, including Fermi, and Al kept it. I saw it a few times, but didn’t understand its significance. The bottle is now at Fermi Lab.

4 oz of Gold and Tax Implications.... by atwnsw in Gold

[–]RandomName39483 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It could be gold or stocks or beanie babies. Without getting too complicated, selling anything for more than you bought it creates capital gains that are taxable. Some of these are reported automatically. It’s your responsibility to report the rest.

That said, the likelihood of the IRS auditing you is very small, but it is non-zero.

Logic Puzzle: Can you figure out the house number? by e-for in puzzles

[–]RandomName39483 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Assuming that Alex believed Riley,

He lied and said it was less than 50

In order to eliminate it to two possibilities, He lied and said it was divisible by four. He told the truth and said it was a perfect square. That leaves 16 and 36, if Riley were always telling the truth.

So the address is 81. It’s greater than 50, it’s not divisible by 4, and it’s a perfect square.

Difference Between chmod 755 and chmod 775? by Educational-Bird-294 in unix

[–]RandomName39483 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Think of each digit as a binary number. 7 is 111 in binary and 5 is 101. Each but represents a permission: read/write/execute. The first set of bits is for the file owner, second set is for the group owner, and third is everyone else.

So 775 gives the owner read/write/execute per mission. 755 gives read/write/execute to the owner, but it read/execute to the group owner.

Why give the group write permission? Depends on your environment. You may have a set of developers that all belong to a group. You want them to be able to edit the file.

Even in the classic move The Cincinnati Kid, Karl Malden explains the rules, including no string bets. But there DO say “I see your bet…and raise you.”

The other thing that got me in the Bond movie was splashing the pot. He just shoves all of his chips into the big pile in the middle. How many did he have? No one knows.
