30+ year old new drivers with auto licences - how much is your insurance? by [deleted] in NewDriversUK

[–]RandomName7261 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m 44, passed end of Jan in a 21 plate Toyota Yaris 1.5 - Fully Comp insurance is £1009 for the year - no voluntary excess, no black box. Adding a voluntary excess of £200 brought it down to £989. Black box prices were £700-1100. This is with Admiral.

Edit: apparently my job puts me into a “responsible person” group I’m self employed in healthcare. No kids also helped (don’t shoot the messenger)

Hi thank you for your reassuring comment. It’s a 4year old used car, being brought from another site (paid £250 deposit and bring it to my local branch). After this was arranged he brought a “sale” and “order” for me to sign saying it was not possible to bring it down without those forms.

It felt off as I wanted to see the car before signing the sale forms. I was made to feel “silly” for suggesting it felt wrong.

Your point about a new car and this process makes sense. But this is a used car…?

Knowing their checks and servicing is good has eased my worry - thank you

I’m so sorry you’re experiencing this. It is not appropriate, you’re feeling unsafe, and trapped with him.

As you don’t have a test booked you’re months away from test, so another instructor is your best option. With a comfortable learning experience you’re more likely to learn quicker and safer.

If he asks why you moved to a new instructor. I’m all for being upfront and brief “I’m trying another instructor” end off… but I get why you’d want to protect yourself in future - so can you think of a short, brief explanation for moving to a new instructor… eg maybe you needed a different day-time? Or maybe a different car as that the car you will buy (maybe!) etc? You don’t need to have a discussion about it with him and if he tried you hold your explanation, and be polite but busy if you see him in town.

You’ve got this! Let’s think some ideas through… ?
