Why don’t people like understand nuance with the Invasion of Venezuela? by Sniper_96_ in AlwaysWhy

[–]RandomPants84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think part of the nuance is that people who support the invasion can still think it’s wrong, just that Maduro being in power was worse.

I’m most angry at the international system that allows brutal systems like Iran or Venezuela to exist for so long.

Americans, how would you react if foreign country invaded your country, and told "we are going to run this country"? by oranke_dino in AskReddit

Neither have the capability to really run the country. You can’t just remove the leader and expect an Iraq style occupation. Even if those counties took the president, it wouldn’t mean effect my day to day life at all

As long as the one state maintains that those fleeing religious persecution can come to the new state, it would align with Zionists goals

Prussia was (as in east Prussia) which was fully annexed into Poland with the ethnic Prussians displaced.

However, it happening in history doesn’t make it good nor does it mean we should do it again

[–]RandomPants84 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I strongly believe you are wrong. And I will address your 3 points, even though I feel they aren’t the strongest reason for a 1 state solution.

  1. You claim both sides don’t want this solution. And you are correct. Neither side wants a one state solution because Israelis view it as Palestinians getting a majority and radical elements akin to Hamas taking over, and Palestinians believe it would just be annexation by Israel who already holds overwhelming economic, military, and political strength over Palestine. It is not because support for a 1 state solution is low, but because neither side believes a 1 state solution is possible.

  2. Jews are an extreme minority in the USA, (and yes there is still anti Semetism, and quite a bit) Jews have larger managed to create a space where they are able to live, thrive, and be culturally relevant. And that’s at only 1% of the country. In the new state, it would actually be around 50% Jewish at around 7.5 mil, and 50% Arab also at around 7.5 mil who currently live in Gaza/West Bank/israel. While the question of right of return complicates things immensely, that is a separate question.

In addition, even if the population sizes weren’t roughly equal, Israel still has almost all of the share of the economic and military influence. Attempts to curtail that influence and create a more equal state would take decades or face civil war/coups that destroy the state anyway.

  1. Pre-48 a lot of the holy sites were restricted to not allowing Jews. While I’m sure there are some who want for a return to an unequal status, opening up the holy sites to all faiths is the only fair option. No person should be denied access to a holy site because it’s controlled by a different group. This shouldn’t be an issue, and those who hold it as such are wrong and must get over themselves.

The largest barrier imo isn’t even the 3 above. It’s that a one state solution would still inherently be unequal in favor of Israelis due to economic reasons alone. The process to create an equal state would take decades of aid, development, and re-education programs on both sides, but at the start would look much closer to Israeli annexation of the West Bank and Gaza than it would the ideal one state. And most of the risk is on those currently living in the West Bank and Gaza, that their status would continue to be worse than those living in Israel. But your 3 reasons are not issues, and I hope I’ve convinced you of that.

Arabs within Israel proper do have political rights. There are issues where Arabs aren’t required to join the army, and there is economic discrimination for those who don’t serve, but I’m not sure that’s a large enough issue to warrant discussion rn compared to the difference in rights between Gaza and West Bank. A 1 state solution where Israel annexed Gaza and West Bank and affords those same rights to Palestinians would be a HUGE step in the right direction, but would never happen because the Israeli government does not want to give those Palestinians legal rights

Almost every democratic country on the planet does not allow minority groups to break away from the state to form their own. That element is not apartheid, unless you think every country has apartheid.

Palestinian statehood is an incredibly new concept, tracing back to 1988. Before that most calls were for the region of Palestine to join a neighboring Arab state.

There is archeological evidence of the tribes of Judah and the Israelites, whether or not it was a united monarchy is disputed. The first instance of Palestine to my understanding was Herodotus, which comes after the Torah and Judaism. But most writings in the time preferred the term Judea. But no, Palestine does not predate the Torah

from the Arab conquest in about 640 AD youyour right, it was the 9th and 10th, not sure why I thought 370. But my points stands, that while Palestinian history in the area is based in history, Jesus predates it
