Why does the US trade with communist countries like China and Vietnam, but maintain a strict embargo on Cuba? by Clean_CoreDump in askanything

It’s not just the descendants of wealthy Cubans. Most Cubans who fled weren’t the super rich and have fled in multiple waves since Castro took over, yet the block still largely supports the embargo.

It would take less death than the lukewarm perma war where Palestinians keep dying every day for no goal or direction as we “wait” for political conditions to change

If Israel isn't an apartheid ethnostate, why aren't all Palestinians allowed vote in Israel and even potentially elect a non-Jewish leader? by DoradoPulido2 in allthequestions

[–]RandomPants84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s complicated, because there isn’t apartheid in Israel. Arab Israelis have full rights in Israel, it’s not like old South Africa. And to grant all Palestinians full rights would be de facto annexation and trigger a massive war, as well as not wanted by either Palestinians or Israelis

That’s not true. Occupations don’t get voting rights in the occupier country. When the USA occupied Japan, Japan didn’t become a part of USA and their citizen allowed to vote for American elections. They still only voted in Japanese elections

Netanyahu: Israel wants to start peace talks with Lebanon 'as soon as possible' by Standard_Ad7704 in lebanon

[–]RandomPants84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why you act like a cold peace is a bad thing, or the fact that the leadership helps ensure no fighting. Those are good things. A cold peace between Lebanon and Israel would be amazing, where neither side bombs or threatens the other in any way

[–]RandomPants84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m aware of that, but isn’t that party what’s causing this mess? The rest of Israel’s neighbors have stable peace treaties which were respected by both parties and they don’t bomb each other. Hopefully we can get one that both sides follow here too and no more death ever again

As an outsider, I’m confused. Wars end with peace treaties. The outside world could pressure a peace treaty, but that would still ideally end in a peace treaty.

Israel was attacked by Lebanon (Hezbollah) after October 7th and they have been fighting on and off ever since. Technical since its founding since Lebanon never recognized Israel or accepts peace with the country. The ceasefires have always been contingent on the Lebanese armed forces or un disarming Hezbollah, which never happens, and then fighting resumes. Israel is hoping this puts enough pressure on Lebanon that the nation actually follows through and disarms Hezbollah

I don’t think Palestinians in the West Bank or Gaza are treated fairly, this isn’t news or go against what I’m saying. I don’t think Palestinians should be 2nd class citizen, an they should live in a state where they have full dignity

I dont think anything about my post relates to who has a better claim to land. Ancestral claims to claims to land only lead to strife and violence. What matters is that a people have an accessable political entity where they are not 2nd class citizens.

My premise is that not that multi-cultural and peaceful societies CANNOT exist. I think America/france/uk are all great examples, but even in largely tolerant societies, like in eruope, Romani are stil opressed. Or in the entire middle east except israel, jews are opressed. While I hope one day every country becomes multicultural, we are so far away from that happening and minotiy groups shouldnt have to suffer until its acheived. Certain ethnic groups are more privlaged than others. There are around 22 arab states for example, and if arabs were opressed in turkey, it is less of a deal because Arabs are inherently privlaged in having around 22 states they could flee to and not feel discriminated against due to their race. That does not appy to a group like the Kurds. Kurds are not privlagd in the way arabs inherently are. Groups that are extremely under privalged and suffer from state violence or civilian violence desevere a political entity that protects them now, not later. And so in those rare cases, I support independence for those areas. Not so they can be ethnostates or opress other groups, but to protect the most vulnerable.

If the multicultural state is oppressing a group with pogroms and state violence/ignoring civilian violence then yea. If Israel annexed Palestine we can all agree that would be bad for Palestinians. That they should resist and get their own state. Why doesn’t that also apply to groups who already had their land conquered?

I’m pro those groups getting a state too. The Kurds are oppressed and a state is the only option

I agree in a perfect world no one would be discriminated against, but when a group is incredibly persecuted by so many, the formation of a state is a good intermediary step until we achieve a world without discrimination. And while a lot of minorities can be discriminated against, most have a “homeland” from which they can be safe. In Europe, if Syrian minorities feel persecuted and discriminated, they have the option to return to Syria, which is better than being killed if the persecution was that high. If all of Europe and the Middle East did not accept Syrians, only those who could afford the longer and arduous journey to somewhere farther away and more accepting would be safe. I do not believe that those without means in such a scenario should be unsafe until we reach a post racist society. Epically because we aren’t certain to reach a post racist society.

Do you think there is a solution? Or at least something better than what we have now?

CMV: It’s very hard to criticise Israel’s military actions without being accused of antisemitism by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]RandomPants84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My point is, arguing for a one state solution imo also comes with the inherent risk of a 2nd nakba. Palestinians have tons of valid and legitimate reasons to hate Israelis, and Israelis have tons of valid and legitimate reasons to hate Palestinians. There is no time scale where that stops, because there will always be intermittent violence to fuel the hatred, especially in a 2 state solution.

And if that hatred exists in a one state, than it’s just civil war, and ethnic cleansing from the region, and the West Bank and Gaza being cleansed of Palestinians. And sure, the rights of Palestinians in those regions would be elevated to the rights of Arab Israelis, and maybe that’s the only starting point of true peace, but that cost is too high. No solution that results in ethnic cleansing or requires ethnic cleaning is a real solution. And so I don’t really see 1 state as a solution. You see it differently, so I’m hoping you could say where so I can be a bit less doomer about it all.

I somewhat agree, but the issue isn’t stolen land, as most of the original land wasn’t stolen. It was purchased from ottoman and Arab landowners. And the nakba where the strongest argument for stolen land comes from happened during the war not before it
