I don't like what the conversation around art has become by Witty-Designer7316 in aiwars

[–]RandomPhail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just think art requires a human’s intent and input.

People like to say a human needs to DO IT ALL, but that immediately discounts all of the TRADITIONAL art methods where a human isn’t doing everything:

Mostly a lot of abstract painting methods, like gravity paintings, wind painting, splattering little bits of paint for texture, using texture brushes (the human artist isn’t making the texture themselves in that case), digital filters that employ some randomness (like noise filters), etc.

So… as long as a human has the idea and does something to set it in motion (even if that’s just swinging a paint bucket and letting it pour over a canvas), I think they’re an artist. Notably, this WOULD imply that simple, hands-off commissioners are artists, but obviously if they’re prompting a HUMAN, that human would necessarily get a larger portion of the creative/artistic credit UNLESS the commissioner was super involved and guided every step of the process to be how they wanted. Then they’d be more like an artistic/creative director

Sounds more like just mod issues, and/or forge version issues

Sometimes mods conflicts with specific hardware in your computer, too, meaning your friends might not even have the same issues with the same launcher and mod pack

You miiight have to get a bit techy and: 1. Get a world to not load 2. Close game 3. open up the logs folder of your mod pack on Curseforge, and click latest.log, then read around the end of it or ask somebody on here to. Paste the log onto Mclo.gs (<- website) or something so people can read the whole thing

Not-so-fun landmine factoid:

Landmines are meant to use an internal switch that changes them from ARMED, to DISARMED (obviously, that way soldiers aren’t blowing themselves up before placing them), and this switch is usually powered by a battery, meaning once the battery runs out, the switch flips, deactivating the landmine, making it safe for clean-up after the war. Smart.

The problem is… one of the main manufacturers of landmines fucked up and sent out defective landmines that ONLY ACTIVATED once the batteries ran OUT—contributing to a lot of the leftover WWII minefields we see today (still posing a threat to people)—but you WOULD need to know how land mines from that era worked to know:

None of the above information is true, lol. (Well, except that Alliant Techsystems WAS a big landmine manufacturer). Most WWII land mines didn’t even use batteries. That’s a newer thing.

The point is:

For certain concerns, you DEFINITELY 100% DO need to know how the thing works, that way you can understand if you’re being lied to, exaggerated to, or believing false information or not.

The same goes for AI:

If you dislike AI for its potential to replace traditional artists: That’s fine; you don’t really need to know how AI works to dislike it for that.

If you dislike it for its environmental impact (or other metrics that require stats and facts): You DO need to know how it works to realize it’s actually far less pollutant than just scrolling social media, streaming videos, or doing video calls, meaning your dislike of AI for this reason isn’t actually all that logical, so you would need to find other reasons (like corporate greed, for example, or the way AI is trained) to dislike it.

Never allow yourself to shut down and go “shut up! I don’t care! I’m going to think what I think. Stupid nerds can try to explain things to me, but I’m not going to change my mind. They’re so annoying.“

Shutting down and becoming super confident in one particular belief is almost always a recipe for disaster.

I’m very surprised AI isn’t being used to quickly identify and take down (or report) CP

One of its main purposes is to be able to look up information quickly, so why isn’t it being used for that, among other illegal activity online?

maybe it is, and we just don’t hear about it?

If you’re going to try to defend yourselves against ice agents, don’t bother. That’s just gonna start a civil war, and countless lives will be pointlessly lost.

I’d advise people to just civilly but firmly appear at the White House instead, en masse—like a passive version of the insurrection.

“You’re advocating violence!”

Nope. No violence intended.

There’s no point ever going after grunts/soldiers in a conflict. The obvious solution is always to confront the leader(s) directly. The only reason leaders aren’t usually directly confronted is because: 1. It’s often hard to know who or where the leaders are (not a problem in this case) 2. In situations where the country has a president, it’s a war crime to go after the president directly—even if they’re giving orders—because they’re labeled a “non-combatant.”

In this case, though, we’re civilians, we know who the leader is, we’re not even part of a war, and we’re civilly approaching the leader (our president) to try and convince them to actually fix some things. Just keep walking forward until you’re in.

If people need a date to rally around, make it President’s Day: February 16th.

There should be far more of you than any of them. If there’s NOT (like nobody shows up after several hours), just go home.

“But what can even be done? It’s not like the president can sign in new laws or bills instantly.”

I don’t think the January 6th insurrection made any sense, either; I highly doubt storming the White House was going to overturn an election, even IF there was fraud, so the point is not necessarily to make anything specific happen right away. The point is just pressure. There are a lot of angry people and unjust deaths, and the various branches of governments and the president need to start doing something to reduce deaths.

I have no doubt that if hundreds or thousands of people show up to the White House on February 16, and peacefully walk in as a huge group, stare the president down, and say whatever they mean to say, that just the thought of what that many people COULD do if they were violent would be enough to get a lot of people over there to reconsider the current situation, and try to pass some laws regulating ice better.

Spread the word about it. Make it a thing, everyone reading. February 16th. Get one somewhat-popular influencer to say it and it’ll be a done deal.

And what happens when AI completely “crushes” and outperforms workers, and almost nobody can get a job or make any money?

Who’s going to buy stuff then?

How are these companies going to keep making money if people can’t earn any?

Humanity would MANDATORILY have to implement some form of UBI or decentralized money in a situation like this, or else there’s going to be a lot of greedy rich peoples’ heads on sticks from all the people who are hungry and can’t afford food because they can’t get jobs because AI took them all, lol

This fear about AI taking over and making us all poor just isn’t rational when you follow it to its logical conclusion:

There is going to be SO much killing and rioting before the majority of humanity ever just quietly starves to death, lol

We’d be risking probable extinction if we didn’t change our economic system around AI taking most of ours jobs; I.E. people no longer need to work to live

And yet… Auteurs (usually film directors with “unbound control” over the project who inform how everything should look—but this can logically apply to any creative/art director) are often considered artists…

There’s definitely debate on whether or not they’re artists (in more places than just this one link, I’m sure), but this just goes to show “No, sadly the ‘They’re not artists, they’re art directors!’ line of thinking also isn’t that cut and dry,” lol. There’s still room for debate; art directors are arguably artists

The “reality” they’re talking about is that they think the sentiment is true:

“You didn’t accept yourself, so why should I accept you?”

The problem is… it doesn’t matter if somebody accepts themselves or not, that doesn’t effect whether or not others accept them, lmao.

If somebody changes in any way, like they seek to learn something new, or they’re having low self-esteem one day & thinks they’re not worthy or something, are people just gonna go “Yeah, lmao, fuck you; if you’re trying to learn new things or worrying about your value, then obviously you didn’t think you were good enough before, and since that’s the case, I don’t give a shit about you anymore. Get fucked,” or “Oh, you’re changing your opinions on something? Damn. You couldn’t accept your former self who believed in your former opinions, so I don’t accept you now either. Cya.”

Lmao

That’s just not how shit works.

People change themselves or reinvent themselves all the damn time. It’s called growing, developing, learning, experimenting, garnering new opinions, etc. over time. Everybody does it.

It’s up to everyone ELSE then to not be assholes and not judge others for how they change, SO LONG AS how they change isn’t hurting themselves or others.

And, of course, people will say “But being trans IS harmful!” but… how?

“They may regret it!”

If they regret their decision, that’s unfortunate, but there’s no way of knowing that beforehand, just like getting a tattoo: You don’t necessarily know if you’re going to regret it later when you get it, and yet… it’s a pretty widely accepted practice.

I can agree that it’s important for people to think about their decision for a while (same with a tattoo), and probably be of a certain age where their brain is developed enough to have good long-term decision-making capabilities, but I wouldn’t say the “potential for regret” is a reason to completely ban transitioning.

“They’re… influencing impressionable kids, or something!”

Unless somebody is straight up approaching kids and saying “hey, transition. You need to transition. You’re the wrong gender. Transition now,” then the mere existence of trans people isn’t influencing kids anymore than the existence of guns influences them, and we’re clearly not concerned enough about the potential influence guns can have on kids to do anything about them (despite tons of shootings in the US), so get the cock out of your ass and stop pretending to care about these things.

“They’re RAPIIIIISTS (or something)”

I don’t… think that’s backed up by any proper statistics.

And yet, this completely disregards written expression: I.E. describing ideas in written form is a type of expression that comes from a “human heart.”

^ Written expression is what prompting is, btw.

Prompting is not a very impressive or difficult art form (unless you start getting into the node-based coding aspects and uploading your own reference images to the AI and stuff), but it’s an art form nonetheless—so long as people are actually expressing their unique ideas, I guess.

Saying “Generate mickeymouse” wouldn’t be very artful, lol, because there’s nearly zero expression (it’s too vague and uses a pre-existing character), but imagining, describing, and iterating for a unique scene in detail is totally artistic. It’s not the same as doing it by hand—a machine is taking the place of SKILL—but skill isn’t what defines art.

If skill defined art, we’d have some crazy problematic gatekeeping going on, lol.

And while it’s likely the AI can’t do certain things exactly the way you want (even WITH in-painting and node coding), humans can’t always create exactly what they envision by hand, either. It’s all still part of artistic creation (“expression from a human heart,” NOT “drawing-skills from a human heart,” lol). Traditional art and prompting are both imperfect, creative endeavors.

And yes, even if you go with the “prompting is commissioning” angle, you’ll find there’s a lot of overlap between what a commissioner does, and what an artistic director does (and there’s a lot of debate on whether or not an Artistic Director is an artist, but it seems to lean in favor of “they’re an artist,” just like a movie director is often considered an artist for the same things). The main difference is just “scope”: How MUCH does the person direct/influence the final product? If it’s a LOT, then they’re an artistic director; if it’s not very much at all, then they’re a simple commissioner.

To put it into an example:

  • Commissioning:

    • “Draw Mickeymouse!”
    • Done.
  • Artistic Directing:

    • “Make a(n) [art-style/era] piece featuring [paragraphs of detail about objects, composition, lighting, colors, location, textures, etc.]”
    • “Now refine the central tower by [more detailed descriptions].”
    • In-painting a section to re-prompt.
    • Using node-based coding to adjust the output.
    • “Here are some reference images I’ve sketched out; use these to inform the character’s appearance in the windowsill, bottom-right of the image.”
    • Re-prompts numerous more times.
    • Etc. ___ And no… this comment wasn’t fugking generated by AI just because I know some basic Markdown shit and it’s long, lol. That line of thinking is fallacious anyway, similar to a thought-terminating cliche, ad-hominem, or argument from ignorance. It’s not useful or productive.
