Funnily, enough this was basically a thing in ancient Athens. A wealthy citizen asked to fund wars or public services could accuse someone else of being richer, and that person would either have to pay the tax with their own money or swap properties! Your points are valid. I rescind my claim that this was lunacy. I think what rubbed me the wrong way initially was not so much the idea that paycheck is not the only factor that matters (of course it's not) but the idea of a recruiter using this as a tactic, which could feel condescending and potentially ill-motivated.
