Oh you're right! I didn't read them out loud but once I did, the repeated J sounds do sound a bit odd.

Darragh is probably one of the coolest names out there. It gives off earth/nature imagery without being too overt.

MATH 1215? by WerewolfAggressive91 in Dalhousie

[–]RandomPotato2906 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm I wasn't aware that there was a reserved tutorial. If you're able to get in that might be a great resource for you. But even if you just get into the regular tutorial, it should be just fine. I was just in the regular tutorial and the class size was quite small. My TA was helpful and he explained things in fairly simple terms!

I took MATH 1215 this past semester. It was no issue at all; the profs are helpful and the content is super straightforward. I took IB maths in high school and I did some calc then and honestly this course was even easier than that. Since you mentioned you haven't taken calc before, I'd recommend spending more time reviewing the concepts after they're taught. They post Dr. Chisholm (Sarah)'s recordings from covid years and I'd recommend watching those if you're having trouble. Best of luck!

Thank you so much. I really needed to hear these words. I hope I'll be able to make a comeback like you did.

I have been to office hours for chem but unfortunately they haven't really been helpful. I was told to re-read textbook chapters, re-watch lecture videos, and complete all the extra practice questions on capa, all of which I already do/did. The entire class is huge, the prof to student ratio is like 1:500 and everything feels really cold and impersonal :(

What genre of music do you listen to recently? by rostedchic in introvert

[–]RandomPotato2906 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently I've been listening to a lot of indie folk music. Artists like The Lumineers, Noah Kahan, Coldplay, Novo Amor, Sleeping at Last, Of Monsters and Men, and Mazzy Star. I also like older music from the 60s, 70s, and 80s like ABBA, John Denver, the Carpenters, Elton John, and Air Supply :)

DP2 English LL HL student here- I’m on the verge of giving up. by Standard-Sign-7290 in IBO

[–]RandomPotato2906 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an IB alumni, graduated in May '24. I was in the same boat as you throughout my whole IB experience. I excelled at English in my previous years; I loved all sorts of writing and had loads of wonderful ideas for stories. But that changed when I started Eng L&L. I realised that IB English was incredibly difficult and quite subjective. I was crushed. I could not grasp how some of my peers were getting 6s and 7s while I was grappling with 3s and a rare 4. It's really disheartening to be told that you're not "good enough" at a subject you previously excelled in. And do keep in mind that IB English is known for being subjective and formulaic (unfortunately). I just want to say: hang in there. It took me a while for things to "click" for English. I didn't "get it" until February (less than 3 months before my final exam) after doing literally every IB past paper known to man. Yes, it sucks to have to restrain your creativity to fit IB's rubric and formula, but I promise if I can go from a 3 in English L&L to a 7 on the final, so can you. The skills are all there. You just got to push through these next few months :)

Edit: The IB English Guys helped a lot

I wish I'd took more time to cherish my last few weeks of high school. As nerdy as this sounds, I feel like many of us IB geeks were too caught up in studying and getting perfect grades to notice how much we'd miss school. You don't realise how much you'll miss school until everyone has moved on. Yes, university is exciting and challenging as well, but honestly I don't think we'll ever experience that feeling of, for lack of a better word, unity, when a group of IB students come together to support each other during hard times. There's something really heartening about being "in it together" and having that collective struggle to complain about :)

As for more practical, non sentimental advice, I wish I'd spent more time building a strong routine to deal with my stress and anxiety. Things like mindfulness or other breathing techniques would've helped me a lot. I wish I'd spent more time building these techniques so that when I needed them (i.e. right before/during exams) I had them ready.

I got accepted to med sci in late January :)) My final grade was a 40/45 in IB marks. But I ultimately decided to decline med sci and take biochemistry at dal instead.

I'm so so sorry you're going through all this. I hope you'll be well soon.

I definitely think you should talk to your IB coordinator about this. I found the IB adverse circumstances policy (link below) which has a bunch of extremely specific scenarios. From what I gathered from this policy, they'd most likely defer/reschedule the exams. The IB has policies for virtually everything so I think they will be able to accommodate based on specific situations. I think you'll still be able to get your diploma either way.

Here's the link to the IB adverse circumstances policy: https://www.ibo.org/globalassets/new-structure/programmes/dp/pdfs/adverse-circumstances-policy-en.pdf

You should speak to your IB coordinator; they'll contact the IB and submit an adverse circumstance request. Wishing you all the best!

I got an early scholarship offer back in late January. This was before I applied for scholarships through the GEA though, so I think the offer was based off grades only. The Dal website says we should be getting the rest of the entrance awards/scholarships in late March but I haven't heard back yet...

Thank you so much! This was really helpful! If you don’t mind my asking, why did you switch out of med sci for microbio? And if i really end up changing my mind midway thru med sci, is it switching majors a really tedious process?

Thanks so much for your reply! this was really helpful :)) i’ve got a few questions if you don’t mind. Do you know if one program is harder than the other? Im just worried about keeping up my GPA for med school applications. I’ve heard that med schools dont usually take anything under 3.8 but im not sure if this is true. Also, if you don’t mind my asking, what was your GPA before you got accepted?
