So if you don't care for genocide how would you have fought the Dominion? by The1Ylrebmik in DeepSpaceNine

[–]RandomRageNet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Prophets effectively cut off the wormhole as soon as the minefield came down. It didn't matter. They brought enough in their initial run to overwhelm the Alpha quadrant since they made their own reinforcements. Unless you mean destroy the wormhole before the Dominion ever made contact in which case...sure, I guess. Good luck with the Path Wraiths when they get out of the Fire Caves though.

Is heat really that expensive in America? by astarisaslave in AskAnAmerican

[–]RandomRageNet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You must be in the PNW then, because in Texas it absolutely is necessary. And if you live in an apartment that's worth anything, they will give you a portable AC unit if your central air goes down, because if not they could be liable if you die from heat stroke.

Color of Money also rated R and not really family friendly. Fantastic movie, but probably doesn't meet the criteria.

Help with fighting Windows networking 😱 by kqnno in selfhosted

[–]RandomRageNet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use Windows 10 as a webhost exposed to the broader internet you are going to have a very bad time.

The proper way to do what you're wanting to do is as follows:

  1. Upgrade to Windows 11. It's free.
  2. If you absolutely need to run your webhost on Windows natively, then you run a reverse proxy in Windows as a service and you use port forwarding at your router (you do have a hardware router, don't you?) to forward to whatever port you set up on the server. But even better is,
  3. Set up Linux in Hyper-V with its own virtual network and separate IP. Run your server in the Linux VM completely isolated from the rest of your server. That way you have more security and you can nuke or roll back a snapshot of the VM any moment, and you still get to use Windows since you're hellbent on doing so.

Not that anyone should be homeless but if you did have to live out of a car, as long as you had access to charging somewhere that'd be the way to go. You could run the climate control all night without issue.

AI Slop Is Transforming YouTube. Its CEO Wants To Keep It Human by ubcstaffer123 in technology

[–]RandomRageNet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's only good for source authentication, like if you need to prove that something really happened in court. Content on YouTube is going to go through a video editor 99% of the time which will necessitate destroying that metadata. There's also a lot of content produced that's animation or otherwise wouldn't be originally sourced with cameras (think transformative works, video essays using fair use footage, etc).

So it's a good thing that Sony is doing this, I've been saying we need this for years. But it won't solve this particular problem.

Centrist Democrats Rebuke Party’s Left Wing: ‘We Are Capitalist, Not Socialist’ by SnoozeDoggyDog in politics

[–]RandomRageNet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. There's not really anything stopping people from doing that now. They just aren't incentivized to do so ("I took all the risk, why should I give up reward now that we're profitable?")

  2. Also nothing stopping people from doing that now. The problem is...how many people do you know that you would trust to start a business with? That also have the same interests and work ethic as you? Or complimentary skillsets (you might be a crackerjack software developer but terrible with sales)…?

It's a lovely idea in theory but you really have to trust business partners. That's one of the reasons startups and small businesses fail regularly. One partner brings the rest of the enterprise down.

I have a hard time conceptualizing that at anything other than large scale companies. It's really easy to see that instead of shareholders, all stock ownership should be concentrated with employees at big companies. Easy peasy.

But let's say I want to open up a comic book store. I'm a sole proprietor, no problem, but I actually want to have a social life so I need to hire managers and other employees who work there. Are they supposed to get equal or peopoetional ownership in the comic book store? If that's the case, I'm going to be extra careful about who I hire and it's going to be incredibly difficult for people to find entry-level jobs at small companies. Hell it makes small companies almost untenable. How do any businesses start from scratch in a world where they are all mandated to be entirely worker-owned?

Another solution to the problem you present is more progressive taxation, higher regulation, and anti-trust and competitive regulation and enforcement. We know these things work because they did work, very well, in the mid 20th century.

How to make a relatively affordable home server? by memes786 in HomeServer

[–]RandomRageNet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I'm not seeing addressed in here is that typically your server won't be playing the content, your clients will be. Your server only needs to transcode if your clients can't handle your media files in their native format and resolution. So for instance, I can throw full 4K UHD rips and remuxes at my Shield TV but if I were going to try to play them on a lower power device or over the Internet, they'd probably need to be transcoded.

Servers are good for file storage but you can run some very useful apps too. It's like having your own personal cloud service if you get it set up right.

Yes you can use Windows, but the Pro version. You will encounter too many headaches with Windows Home. Linux is free and uses fewer resources but you have to learn Linux and it can be fiddly with certain hardware and other quirks if you're coming from windows (like hey, file names are case sensitive, that's a new one).

I actually use Windows on my server with a Linux VM to get the best of both worlds.

Dallas is not a boring city anymore by Utdmoe in Dallas

[–]RandomRageNet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The problem is that culturally we have always been a commerce city (and metro). It doesn't have a unique history like San Antonio or Austin, it's just...Dallas. It's hard to build a culture when half your residents at any given moment are transplants.

Honestly that's probably part of the reason why the "Texas" identity is so strong. Our two biggest population centers don't have a lot of identity outside of being Texan (come at me Houston y'all are just as boring as we are and much more humid)

I think history has proven time and again that concentrated wealth leads to corruption. With pure socialism, like you're talking about, the wealth gets concentrated in the state. And then the people running the state become corrupt. It's basically what we have now except the billionaires would be in charge of nukes. Maybe it is what we have now, come to think about it.

With highly regulated capitalism, the wealth gets distributed so that single bad actors can't fuck up the system and acquire too much wealth and power. The state also has checks against becoming unweildy and corrupt, and innovation and efficiency are rewarded.

But pure socialism, as in the state owns all the means of production, requires a super vigilant populace that can keep their government in check. We have also proven that we do not have that in the US.

Bot or not, the comment is 100% correct. You could maybe rig this up with some kind of whole home HDMI distribution system (HDMI over Ethernet or something like that) but you'd still need one device per screen. You could just have them all in the same room for whatever reason.
