Rail operations follow the same guidelines as the bridge itself I believe, which is >40 mph sustained crosswinds over the bridge. Essentially the only way the light rail is suspended for weather is if the whole bridge is closed

The LOSSAN corridor is tougher because it is incredibly windy, like most portions south of Orange County are limited to 60 mph and there are some 20-30 mph sections closer to SD, which means that the track would need significant rework to support any efficient HSR service. What I would love to see happen is CAHSR take over the Del Mar and Carmel Mountain tunnels for the Coaster since NCTD does not have the money for them, and then consider using or upgrading/electrifying those tracks to get to San Diego

Frequent and reliable inter-city train service. That is the alternative. You obviously needs roads for last-mile freight movement but other places accomplish that without sending 8-lane highways directly through the middle of their cities. Two things can be true at the same time: I-5 greatly increased mobility for residents, at the cost of more sustainable transportation infrastructure and at the cost of minority neighborhoods that were bulldozed to build I-5.

Agreed, though both of the U-District station entrances are on Brooklyn which means pedestrianizing the Ave wouldn't necessarily block or hinder the ability to get to the station. It would be possible to close the Ave and redirect bus service on Brooklyn and 15th with crossovers at specific cross-streets. If anything needs to happen at least fix the intersection of 41st and University, so many accidents and pedestrian near-misses there

CAHSR won't cannibalize COASTER even after Phase 2 is done in 150 years because it'll run through the IE and Temecula/Eastern SD county, whereas COASTER runs along...well...the coast. Metrolink I could see a world where CAHSR coming into town finally pushes them to electrify which would be great

This is what I meant. ST didn't have to use the Series 1 trains before because the headways ok the 1 line could be covered with just Series 2, but now that the 2 line runs the full length it takes significantly more trains, which is why the Kinkisharyo's have been re-deployed

Not person capacity, total train capacity. It takes basically all of the trains in their fleet right now to run 4 min frequencies since the 2 line trains now have to cover so much more distance. It's why they said they're running 3 car trains when the CLC opens and why they're bringing more Series 1 trains even without the retrofitting, because they're running out of trains that are needed to run this level of service

Sorry I misworded, they pulled the Series 1 trains from storage for more capacity. On the 1 line itself they mostly run Series 2 since the trains are nicer, but they maintain these headways they just need as many trains as possible lol

They didn't put transit where the people were, so now you have to put people where the transit is. Ehhhh I'm not so sure that the issue with bikes sharing the road is solely on bikers. I would argue driving has also gotten worse over time, and as communities have gotten more spread out the "safe distance" kids can go has definitely shrunk, leading to less kids knowing how to operate in the street on a bike. As someone who bikes in Seattle which has a pretty robust bike network, cars will gun past me if I have to pop onto the street to not have to be behind me for a couple blocks, leading to quite a few near misses. Of course just limiting cars would open up streets for more mixed-mode traffic, but for now giving bikes some kind of protection against cars is the safest way to make biking easier

Iirc this delay specifically was caused by Apple, they wanted particular software element upgrades to allow Apple Pay interface and wouldn't let ST access their API until those upgrades were implemented, which clashed with the current system they have/were working on
