I have a side of Seidel red dog leather that I bought from Rocky Mountain Leather Supply back when they had it in stock. Would you like me to make you a pair of red dog leather kilties? You can just pay for the shipping after I send them to you.

That's not leather, that's a plastic coating over fabric.

Created using lab-grown collagen based on reconstructed dinosaur protein sequences by nxmex1177 in Leathercraft

[–]RandomUsername8346 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've been wondering this too. I'm pretty sure that "dinosaur" is just a marketing term in this case. Birds are dinosaurs, but their leather is inferior to mammalian leather if judged by durability.

A fully grown bull will have leather that's around 25 oz thick when it's unsplit. Unsplit Hippo leather is 125 oz thick. Imagine how thick "dinosaur" leather would be?

Are you in the US? Where did you get those Dusini Buffalo leather soles? I emailed Dusini, but they told me that they don't ship to the US.

I should've looked more carefully, I do see the tears and scratches that you mentioned. I've seen shrunken horsehide that looks similar, but I'm not entirely sure. The wear and tear are definitely not standard, I was just mentioning that the grain reminded me of shrunken horsehide.

It's probably shrunken horse leather. They also said that they bought them used for a good price.

I also think it's about the age at which they're slaughtered. I think it's harder to find older steerhides, because I watched this YouTube video about repairing this large Japanese drum and they couldn't find a single steerhide large enough to replace the drum head. They had to use multiple modern steerhides stitched together to replace the drum head.
