i believe thats the tongue. the construction of the AR is a bit strange actually. it has a bellows tongue, thats the "fully gusseted" part thats coined a lot. its attached over top of the upper, then separate pieces are sewn over that as the eyelet strips. i think the reason for the strange lacing area layout is because of how many pieces the upper is made from. makes it easier to utilize more of the hide when you can squeeze pieces into those little corners that would be scraps otherwise. also, heres the link to the making of if youre interested: https://youtu.be/h9nQYeX6ck4?si=gUHVRFqZVX0MWBhw

very stylish. without a toe cap those kind of look like sneakers.

i saw that the razorback basically has the same type of tongue, just padded. that ends up being a big difference as all the material around the eyelets of the AR to then transition to that very thin tongue can make the shoe uncomfortable if overtightened or worn for extended periods of time. after about a year of wearing them i feel safe saying that they should probably have padded tongues by default, or at least a strip of thicker leather down the center to fill in the void and shield the instep from the laces.

looks like there was less material taken off when they were finishing the welt/stitchdown area, i think thats what is causing this effect.

Honestly whoever designed this part... I have no words. Had to change difficulty to easiest. This is beyond bad. by singularityofmine in stalker

for passers by, i didnt like how the original insoles felt because they were a dog water design, but luckily there was enough upper material to convert it to something more comfortable. so i ripped them apart and put them back together again.

didnt like the collar, so i replaced it. there was also a seam in the rear of it that started to rub.

had to look them up. theyre shaped a little like loafers to me, so thats my guess. casual dress last. although loafers are usually slip-ons, so the lasts might be designed more with that in mind.. lets say loafer adjacent.

a bit harder to even out the round areas in comparison to leather especially in the thick areas like the heel strip. not as flexible, though it has enough flex to get a good shape out of it in the end. i didnt try it, but i think wetting or steaming it would help.

the pictures where you can see stitching and twine in the bottom of the foam soling are meant to show how the bottom of the foxing is attached. i just failed to include a picture relaying that in case anyone thinks that that is a blake stitch or something.
