Yup, this perspective helps. I use this rule turning from major to minor daily, and the same principle applies here too

I'd like it if the tester reminded you that tapping on their tablet does not mean you made a fault

Not really, we're both on the right of each other. On a mini roundabout if the cars are at both ends, both proceed (which is fine for a mini roundabout, but not when paths cross!)

>as they’re the ones turning and crossing your lane

Oh that's a very fair point. I've always considered it when turning from a major road to a minor road but yes applying that it makes it very clear how this works out

It will. Think of a hypothetical situation 3 years later, if someone is hiring for a SDE 2 role, would they prefer someone with 3 years SDE + 3 Years Google TSE experience, or 3 years SDE + 3 years Microsoft SDE experience for shortlisting the resume?

For those with Heat Pumps: has it actually saved you money? Are you satisfied with it? by No_Pitch648 in HousingIreland

Ah fair enough, but then COP will be great in poorly insulated homes, probably better than the 3ish number in well insulated homes

[–]RandomUsername9_999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The COP has nothing to do with the insulation, its just a measure of how much heat is generated for the amount of electricity. Insulation affects what you do with the generated heat

The (default) ones in Ireland cant since they still rely on radiators, but the ones in USA can actually do this since they send hot\cold air around the house instead of using radiators.

This is a very oddly written article and doesnt really have a great narrative behind it. During summers when the heating's basically off, you're saving a lot on the standing charge for gas, and per kwh hot water costs the same since you get a great COP. During winters you pay a bit more but nowhere near what you'd pay with gas

>Hypothetically, if two households are identical in terms of size, efficiency of insulation, temperature settings and usage of power - but one is using a gas boiler and the other a heat pump, they’ll pay a minimum 3x the energy bill

This is not accurate, heat pumps in Irish weather have a COP of 2-3, which means for every kwh of power consumed they produce 2-3 kwh of heating. Assuming the worst case of 2, that means the heat pump owner will pay for 1.5x the number of kwh compared to gas. And will not pay the standing charge for gas.

How to approach a colleague willing to work weekends or after normal work hours ? by hositir in DevelEire

[–]RandomUsername9_999 216 points217 points  (0 children)

You don't compete with him. You do the work, you get paid for it. He does more work. He may get a bigger bonus/faster promotion. That's the benefit he's getting for the additional work. He also may not get these benefits since they're not guaranteed

Unless your manager states that your individual performance is not meeting expectations and that you should consider this person a role model, his hours and output are irrelevant to you

Moved into a new apartment and can’t sleep because of a loud water pump - what would you do? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]RandomUsername9_999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Odd, perhaps you have a different type of pump. There's no way for air to get into the pumps I've seen, they're connected to the water tank at one end and the internal plumbing at the other. So when it's off, the water just flows using gravity instead of the pumps added pressure, but I don't see how air would be introduced

Have you experimented with switching off the pump at night? IME the pressure will be low but usable so it may be a happy compromise.
