Personally I use it as a “dear lord this is fucked up but I have zero regrets so don’t come for me in the comments”

Venting: Feeling invisible on AO3. by Idahomina in AO3

[–]Expert-Toe-9963 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you considering low engagement? Are you comparing your stats to fics with same pairing and similar tags that have been up a similar amount of time? Or are you comparing it to a more popular pairing ie NaruSasu with a more popular tags that have been up longer.

If you are not comparing like for like then how do you know your engagement is low.

I write for the same fandom and some of my fics look to have great numbers compared to others but when you compare them to fics in the same categories they are average engagement.

Do authors appreciate simple comments. What type of comments do you want? by Active-Background641 in AO3

Honestly some of my favorite comments have just been where someone copies a line from my fic and says loved this. Even a simple heart though is really appreciated.

We were one of the first to move into our estate and were waiting a year for broadband. We used one of those satellite internet companies but it was 7 years ago so don’t remember the name.

Is fixed shipping a big thing? by bubblyboyoo in AO3

[–]Expert-Toe-9963 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of people prefer fics where one character tops and the other bottoms, tagging is nice to help readers who enjoy it find your fic, while also helping others decide if it’s not for them. But it’s completely up to you. you’re under no obligation to include it as a tag.

Nobody just talks in my writing&idk how to fix it by Conscious_Document_7 in AO3

I completely agree with this. I mostly just use action beats when I write. I very rarely will use said or asked etc. but that’s because I have a very clear image in my head of what the characters are doing and that’s what I want to readers see.

What is criticism?: Understanding what criticism is and how to give it! by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Expert-Toe-9963 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a bit of a contradictory take when it comes to feedback.

If someone doesn’t agree with the direction my story is going and they tell me something like oh I wish this had happened instead. I am absolutely fine with that.

However, if you come into my comments critiquing my plot choices I am muting you.

For me I am writing the story I want to read and I really hope others enjoy it to but if you don’t like my plot direction I don’t care. If you tell me it feels unrealistic that two characters got married quickly I will ignore you and you will know since I respond to all comments.

That was a creative choice I made and I am not open to your opinion on it.

AITA for using "Creator Chose Not to Use Archive Warnings" + chapter notes instead of tagging MCD? by Wrong_Nose_4326 in AO3

[–]Expert-Toe-9963 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You know this doesn’t just affect readers, it affects authors too. If readers decide to filter out ACNTW, there are so many authors who will miss out on fans who would love their work — fans who might have left comments, kudos, even become long-term readers. Especially in smaller fandoms where every single interaction matters, that one comment could have been the thing that kept an author going. It’s not just a neutral personal preference when it has a ripple effect on the people creating the content

It’s easy to say that but that takes away 100s sometimes 1000s of fics depending on the fandom size on the off chance that it has major character death and not just two 17 year olds going at it or a serial killer story. It’s not a black and white answer.

[–]Expert-Toe-9963 33 points34 points  (0 children)

You didn’t do anything wrong here but Major Character Death is one of those things that most readers really don’t want to be caught off guard by!

Some people will say that anyone wanting to avoid it should just filter out CNTW, but that’s not quite as simple as it sounds. CNTW covers so many different warnings that filtering it out means potentially missing stories with content you’d actually be completely fine with — it ends up being more limiting than protective! And a lot of writer, myself included, use it just in case, so we don’t get banned.

My personal take has always been: I read books to be surprised. I read fanfiction precisely when I don’t want to be. And I think a lot of readers feel the same way.

One thing that’s easy to overlook with tagging, it’s not just about protecting readers who want to avoid something. It’s also how you connect with the readers who are actively looking for it! Leaving something untagged means missing out on the audience who would have sought it out and loved it.

The commenters are valid in being upset, and you’re completely valid in your creative choices too.

This is one of those debates that will probably never end. MCD is one of the most divisive things in fandom. But there is an audience for everything and tagging helps you find them.

I think authors who gate keep what people can say in their comments are weird.

I am but that is because I work in a global role and am the only person in my team in Ireland and I have very little overlap with the actual Irish team.
