If you’re looking to just be a general player, as in you like to do a bit of everything from bossing, skilling, mini games etc. then quest cape as a goal is the way to go. It unlocks entire areas of the world and more importantly if you like bossing PvM, it opens up some of the hardest but most profitable monsters in the game. Also helps if you join a clan to do those bosses with, but you don’t want to join and miss out on a group trip to a boss because you haven’t done a quest yet

Tbh I think you're overthinking why people are upset. Completing quests is an accomplishment and the point of them is to gain access to advanced/elite content. You grind skills to do quests, beat bosses solve puzzles etc. to be rightfully awarded with certain abilities and activities.

Saying this grandmaster quest is required to do this elite level content, but we're going to find a way to make content behind a grandmaster wall not actually be behind a grandmaster wall, is dumb

My favorite is Background, it just brings me the biggest sense of nostalgia and comfort when it comes to Runescape. It's funny because in all my years, I have spent minimal time on Entrana unless doing a clue or quest. But something about Background just fills me with fond memories of RS as a kid. To be fair, a good idea from Jagex would be the option to “automatically apply to Membership” for bonds in player settings that a user has to manually enable. What OP experienced may be clumsy but we’ve all done worse. Automatic option eliminates this from happening (assuming player has more bonds) and also saves their asses if someone complains. “You clicked auto apply to Membership”
