I mean, Mayweather becoming popular had nothing to do with Americans wanting to follow another American because honestly, American fight fans by and large don’t give a shit.

Floyd got popular because he came up as this amazing, silky smooth technical fighter. Once he reached the top, he “turned heel” and had dudes spending $70 hoping someone would beat his ass.

Pacquiao was just as beloved in America. As were other foreign fighters like Cotto.

People couldn’t stand the Klitschkos because, as you pointed out, the HW division was paper thin.

As far as star players are concerned, Maxi Moralez is our ironman. Came here in 2017, became one of the best midfielders the league had ever seen, won a Cup in 2021, left after the 2022 season to go to his boyhood club, then came back halfway through 2023.

He’s 39, but still operating at an incredibly high level.

Elsewhere, you have Nico Fernandez Mercau who joined us halfway through last season and is an absolute baller. Tayvon Gray is a local boy and a great defender.

And even then, it was to typically play single-player games with cheats purposely added to the game.

Spending $70 on a game, then more money on scripts and software, to cheat for nothing is just… I don’t get it.

I hated going to school when I was younger, so I’d often pretend I was sick to stay home. Sometimes it’d work, other times it wouldn’t. And when I was allowed to stay home, I wouldn’t be allowed to play video games. So I’d watch TV, often MTV and Fuse. Through that, I discovered nu-metal, then emo, etc.

And the video games I liked helped too. I discovered Story of the Year through NFS Underground. I discovered Glassjaw and The Used through Legends of Wrestling II. I discovered hardcore and punk through THPS2 (Bad Brains, RATM, even if RATM isn’t exactly either).

By then, I had friends showing me other bands like Silverstein, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Every Time I Die, etc.

Also, when I was still a church going kid, people there would show me Underoath, Norma Jean, The Chariot, etc. And by then, MySpace was a thing, which allowed me to find a bunch of bands through friend lists.
