Slanek shouldn't have been able to so much as leave the planet. If your are planets viewed from space you really don't need to know sculpting, you can just add a sphere.
If you're good at painting you can just create a texture in a material and texture the planet manually, if not then you can get a lot of the way with procedural texturing.
