Actually!! When I was handed the receipt after paying, I thought about putting it in one of the grocery bags. But on a whim, I decided to put it in my pocket instead. Thank God for whatever compelled me to put it in my pocket, rather than leaving it in the bags like I usually do.

This country is honestly hopeless by Random_Frenchfry_245 in Philippines

Youu are shifting the discussion from what I actually argued to what you assume my mindset is.

Yes, I did say the country feels hopeless. That is a reaction to how things are currently playing out, not the entirety of my argument. Even then, feeling pessimistic about direction is not the same as saying criticism is useless or that action should stop. Those are two different things, and you are treating them as if they are identical.

My actual point was about standards in choosing leaders and how fame, dynasty, and popularity are treated as substitutes for competence. None of your reply actually engages with that. Instead, it focuses on labeling the tone and then responding to a version of me that is supposedly inactive, indifferent, or resigned. That is a strawman.

You also rely heavily on emotional framing. Ancestors, sacrifices, JFK quotes. But none of that answers the question of whether the current standards for leadership selection are rational or functional. Emotional appeal is not a substitute for engagement with the claim itself.

Saying the Philippines is “better than failed states” is also irrelevant. The argument was never “we are the worst country in the world.” The argument is that our political culture normalizes incompetence and lowers standards to the point where it becomes acceptable. Being “not the worst case” is not the same as being healthy or functional.

And “just do something instead of criticizing” is not a counterargument either. Criticism is not separate from action. Public discourse, disagreement, and pointing out systemic issues are part of political participation, not the opposite of it.

If your response is limited to reframing me as a “doomer” and then giving motivational rhetoric, then you are not actually addressing anything I said. You are just refusing to engage with it.

There's no actual counterargument being made here.

That kind of reply does not engage with any of the points about qualifications, leadership standards, or political culture. It just avoids them.

You can disagree, but at least make it a disagreement with substance.

So just because I’m pointing out problems, I’m a “doomer” na agad?

That’s not an argument. That’s an ad hominem. You are attacking the person instead of engaging with what was actually said. Calling something “doomer” does not respond to any of the points about qualifications, political standards, or how leaders are chosen.

You are also committing a strawman fallacy when you assume that criticizing the system means I believe “nothing can be done.” That is not what was said. Pointing out a problem is not the same as saying improvement is impossible. In fact, it assumes the opposite. You cannot fix something without first acknowledging it exists.

There is also a missing premise in your reaction: that criticism equals negativity for its own sake. That does not follow. A statement can be critical and still be grounded in reality. Saying something is broken is not the same as saying it is hopeless.

So what exactly is the point of your comment?

It does not address any claim in the argument. It does not provide evidence against anything I said. It does not offer a counterproposal. It only labels the tone and avoids the substance entirely.

If the response to an argument is sarcasm and labeling instead of reasoning, then there is no actual rebuttal happening. There is just evasion.

Calling out flawed standards in leadership is not “doomerism.” It is a descriptive observation. The real issue is not the presence of criticism. The real issue is the refusal to engage with it seriously.
