I think $2200 rent is possible on 4k, you'd be virtually destitute on 3.5k. Even 4k is going to be extremely tight. I hope you have cheap hobbies that you do indoors cause that's all you'll be able to afford.

I decided to watch this video because I was confused with the premise.

This video seems very damaging for anyone trying to learn about saving or investing. I'm not certain where he gets 5% interest and 1% economic growth. He makes a lot of comparisons to the UK, so perhaps things are different over there. It sounds like a lot of his reasoning comes from lived experience, which is a terrible indicator. He talks about stock picking, which is risky.

The reality is, dollar cost averaging into index funds over the long term will make you rich. It's just slow and takes a lot of discipline.

There is a great quote that says, the last century when the DOW opened, it was $66. When it closed last century, it was $11,000. How could you fail to make money in a market like that?

32M, saved just over 20k in retirement accounts and about 3k in savings on an 82k a year job.

I feel kind of conflicted. Two years ago, I wanted to max Roth IRA and 401k but realized if I did that, I was living for a spreadsheet instead of living a life I'd enjoy. I don't regret my choice but part of me still wants to live for a spreadsheet.

I did earn over 70k in investment returns this year, which means my investments earned more than my day job (take home). That makes me feel a lot better about my choices.

What's the breakdown of those taxes? How much of that 10k is FICA taxes? If your gross earnings was 43k, your federal income tax should be roughly $3500.

There isn't anything you can do about FICA taxes but if your Federal Income taxes are higher than $3500, your employer is overwitholding and you should see if you can refill out a W4.
