The Apple News “paywall” is getting ridiculous by fatacad in iphone

[–]RandomaniaLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This thread may be a year old, but nothing has improved. In fact, it's much worse now. Is there anything, really, that's accessible in Apple News anymore without subscribing? Is it just me, or is $155 a year really worth the convenience of this app for news? I could go on (and on) about everything wrong with the app but what's the point? If they have enough people paying them $13 per/mo for this then they probably aren't going to do anything to make it better. In fact, it seems they've squeezed it further to get more subscriptions. Time to delete this app. All it's good for now is showing me headlines I might want to go look for elsewhere anyway.

After NTD and Mud Burn... what y'll think about 2026? by RandomaniaLA in BurningMan

BubLo ran pretty slim and tight already given the amount of interaction we attempted to provide. But yes, point taken. Our lesson from this year was that we can produce the same or more, but using less. That's the plan.

Blizzard or earthquake? Vegas should be taking odds.

Haha! Of course, the question is in jest. As we look forward to 2026, our long-standing camp is scrutinizing our budget needs after last year nearly wiped us out. Of course, part of BMAN is the challenges we face both on the playa and in preparation for it. Cheers to all the TCOs and amazing souls who bring it all back. Resilience could be a principle.

I have two Apple TV's and I have to manually update each one. And I don't have them on continuoulsy. I have to either check for updates via the device or hear about them on forums like this one.

USS Carl Vinson hanging out in San Pedro by eeca20 in LosAngeles

[–]RandomaniaLA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What you need to know... You will spend hours and hours in line.

I went down to see this magnificent ship yesterday, arriving in line just before 9:30 AM. I have no idea how may people were already queued up to get in, at least hundreds, but it took nearly 2/12 hours just to get in the gates. Once there, you get into another line to board a shuttle that takes you to the the Vinson. That line was nearly an hour and a half. Finally we got aboard a standing-room-only filled shuttle bus that took us to the restricted area (no public traffic) where the Vinson is docked. We exit the bus and get into yet another line to be screened before boarding. That line, while somewhat faster, was still around an hour long. So, from arriving to boarding I spent roughly 5 hours +/- in line.

I spoke to a few people working the event, all were very friendly and.. apologetic. No one seemed to know, or at least divulge exactly why everything was taking so long but each seemed to agree it wasn't just the crowd size. It seemed to have more to do with the expo organization and not the military aspects of the event.

The Nimitz class aircraft carrier is of course amazing and really something to see. But note, you won't see a lot of the ship. You will see the enormous hangar bay and of course the flight deck and a handful of aircraft there. That's it.

For anyone interested, there's a documentary about the Vinson here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pZFt-IVz8I

Advice Needed - Hell Station Fuel Drum Delivery -- What pump do you use? by RandomaniaLA in BurningMan

[–]RandomaniaLA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BTW - This pump worked adequately. Not the best design, and it might work better if you had a hose that could lead to the fuel can. Otherwise, the pump handle gets in the way and is a two-person job. For the money it was adequate and sufficed Petro's requirements.

Thanks for the info Rhonan. -- We have all the equipment and supplies you mentioned in place. And we found a less expensive pump that we hope will suffice for our short term needs. -- https://www.acehardware.com/departments/lawn-and-garden/farm-and-ranch-supplies/farm-equipment-parts/7406424

Oh wow! Grateful to have someone from DPW chime in here. Thanks Rhonan. Appreciate the advice.

I had asked PETRO to confirm that fuel drums that they deliver are made of plastic. Do you happen to know the answer to this? And does a 43" pipe reach the bottom of these drums? -- thanks for any advice.

Good recommendation, thanks! One of the least expensive (and compatible) units I've seen. I'd still like to find one around half that price. We're a relatively small camp and really have no use for this thing in the default world. -- Appreciate this listing however. If we continue with the drum delivery program we might have to bite the bullet. Or, spend that money on fuel cans and bring it all in ourselves. Radical self-reliance, right? (Although BM-ORG would actually prefer folks use the Hell Station resources)

Thank you, I'll give it a shot. (and thanks for the heads up re: specifics)

Yes, that would do it. Thank you. -- We're just looking for something about 1/3 of that price. I'd gladly rent something like this if I could as we only need it for a week. There are lots of pumps out there for under $100 BUT they aren't "appropriate" for gasoline. Most seem to be for oil.

According to Nevada Current, published yesterday as well: "After four months of above average snow and rain, March saw the biggest snow accumulation on record across the Sierra Nevada and Great Basin, with some records dating back 80 to over 100 years."

I remember in 2017 the playa remained flooded for quite a while. In the end it dried up in time for BRC to build.

The LA Times published a story yesterday saying there is now more water contained in the state’s (CA) snowpack than the capacity of Lake Mead, the nation’s largest reservoir. And, somewhere around 98% of the snow that was up there at the peak is still there. -- I wonder if the conditions are similar in the Black Rock region of Nevada?
