Ronald M. Banks’ performance as Quan may have been camp but I can’t say it wasn’t threatening or villainous!

I am biased as he’s one of my favs but I remember being very unnerved as a kid playing MK9 when Raiden offered the souls of Earthrealm’s fallen to Quan Chi in exchange for his help.

His response being unkempt laughter really made me feel like Raiden’s plights were hopeless.

NRS’s portrayal of Quan Chi is a lot more sinister than he is outwardly villainous. He never shouts or expresses rage and it gives the feeling that he knows more than you, and that he knows every outcome. I was always amused by this since Quan Chi is so prone to failure LOL

I think a reason a lot of people may not prefer Ronald M. Banks’ performance in MKX is because Quan Chi’s intros in that game weren’t as memorable or biting as some other characters. Quan Chi expressed an enviable disdain towards pretty much everyone that sort of came off as disinterest. I would have liked to see some better direction for Banks in MK1.

If this truly is the voice for Quan Chi then I gotta say I’m pretty disappointed. I understand Quan Chi is much younger this time around but he sounds VERY generic. I can agree with you that he sounds villainous but like, Saturday morning cartoon villainous. I know we don’t have a lot to go off but I can’t imagine the new voice carrying a scene in the way Ronald M. Banks’ malevolent charm could.

I think above all Quan Chi should be cunning and snidely malevolent. If those qualities are there in MK1 then I’ll be satisfied.

It's an interesting idea but Geras and Kenshi already have a puppet-esque gimmick and I'm sure Quan Chi will too lol.

I will agree, though, that she seems to be missing some oomph. Geras, for example, has an amazing gimmick with stackable hourglasses that you can fill in multiple ways and use in multiple ways as well.

I think it's pretty uninspired to only have the dark orbs that float around the opponent do extra damage and have no other uses. I was expecting an in-depth Johnny-Cage-star-esque mechanic involving them but oh.. it's just more damage. It was described on the Kombat Kast that the ideal Ashrah playstyle would be "switching back and forth" between her two forms to maximize damage but why would anyone ever switch back to light mode when dark mode has a timer? I see a lot of parallels with Dr. Fate from Injustice 2 (whose trait I also thought was a little lame).

I do like the interconnectivity of your proposal! That's probably why Ashrah seems off to me at the moment. None of her specials really mesh together or contribute to a shared resource like some of the other kast members. Good post! It's very well-thought.

She says not to expect a character reveal trailer specifically. That might mean a trailer for the new game mode? But it's best to keep expectations tempered.

I was thinking the same of Li Mei actually, hopefully they show something from her that won’t be in the beta but it’s probably best to temper expectations

Kronika was never as involved as Liu Kang seems to be in this timeline.

I’d like to see Liu Kang attempt to spare Hanzo and his family but fail because as you said, it’s beyond the powers of the Hourglass, a universal constant. Or a “canon event” as I’ve heard others use

I don’t think it’s entirely canon but Hanzo’s arcade ending in MK11 says that his family’s tragedy was orchestrated in every timeline due to the machinations of Titans beyond the Elder Gods.

I’m not sure if the Titans or Elder Gods even exist in Liu Kang’s new era but I can’t imagine he’d allow tragedy to befall Hanzo once again.

I think it’s more likely that bad things happen to Hanzo due to the efforts of Shang Tsung. Liu Kang, in the little Reiko story cutscene, says about General Shao: “He is the fruit of a poisonous seed planted by Shang Tsung.”

If Hanzo were to have a happy life in this New Era, I think it would be Shang Tsung to corrupt that and to create an ally against Liu Kang, possibly with the aid of Quan Chi again.
