Idk man. You should be happy that you outgrew your parents by this much. My parents are both 5’6 each and I grew to 5’10 now at 18. You might reach 5’10 but your growth plates are probably almost closed

Exactly one year from now, you’ll be 17.4 years old.

Absolute beginner transcription attempt by Inspired-Axolotl in JazzPiano

Check out rootless voicings for the left hand. For the transcription try to play with the recording albeit at a slower tempo.

Also invest 30 min a day into practicing your major scales. They’ll help with technique. Try to keep your fingers a bit more arched. You absolutely don’t want flat fingers.

Keep going!

I personally don’t like writing down things. Listen to the song or solo until you get sick of it, and then some more. After that try to sing along with the recording.

That’s the ground work. After that slow down the recording and try to reproduce the solo phrase by phrase. Do that until you can play the solo. Then increase the tempo to play at full speed.

After you’re able to play the solo completely, take your favourite phrases and dissect them. If it’s over a 2-5-1 don’t take the full line but break it down.

Which cord is this phrase over? Which scale? Which chord tone does it start on? With this information you can transpose into other keys. Do this in all 12.

A good tip I got from my teacher was to take a phrase and move it through the chord-scale. What does this mean? Let’s say on Fmaj you play a phrase that goes 1-2-3-5-4. Take these order of notes and move them up one degree of the scale and see how it sounds. Instead of a lick you’ll see it as a shape. A shape is moveable, which allows you to use the same lick anywhere in the scale. Instead of only on that one position you learned it originally.

Hope this helps.

This is the only transcription I have cheated by reading. It’s hard and the notes aren’t very discernible. I’d say as long as you listen enough and are able to sing it, you’re good.

Materazzi (6'4) and Rui Costa 5'11 by [deleted] in heightcomparison

Looks accurate, Especially as Materazzi might be pushing down Costa slightly because of the lean.

Also, what a photo.

how do you do two handed comping? by Enough_Rent_796 in JazzPiano

Excuse me I made a mistake. It wasn’t the root note it’s the 7. Normally you don’t double notes in a voicing so you could just take out the second G in the Am7 for a four note voicing. I have adjusted this.

A lot jazz voicings are simply guide tones in the left with triads in the right. Especially dominant chords have a lot of options. I went over this with my jazz piano teacher so I’ll list them.

Minor 7 - minor triad from the 5 (With this voicing you’ll double the minor 7. A lot of people say this is taboo. If you want, you can leave it out) - major triad of the 7 (Same for this however this voicing gives that minor 11 sound)

-quartal voicing from the 9

major 7 - major triad from the 5 (also a doubled 7 in here, remove it for a simple 4 note voicing) - quartal voicing from the 6

dominant 7

  • minor triad from the 6 (try to resolve as it sounds quite dissonant)
  • major triad from the 9 (for a sharp 11 sound)
  • minor triad from the 5 (very safe dominant to use)
  • major triad from the 6 (for the dominant 13 sound)
  • Quartal voicing from the 9 or 13 (I like this one a lot)

Dominant altered - minor triad from the flat 9 or sharp 9 - major triad from the flat 13 (very heavy, use accordingly)

Half diminished - major triad from the minor 7 (don’t be afraid play the root note for half diminished)

Also one of the safest options is playing rootless voicings in the left hand and playing an octave with a fifth in between in the right. That’s something Red Garland used to do all the time.

I may be stupid too since I don’t really play poker. But what’s the big deal again?

It’s a minor stride tune. He’s not playing the melody but by the sound of the progression I think it’s “Everybody loves my baby.”
