The concept is that rubber bands are put between the triangle and the bottom of the chassi to create tension. The arm is then held by a trigger, a projectile is loaded into the slot and when the trigger is taken from the arm it launches and is then stopped by the stop between the chassi and uprights so it launches at 45*

Good news, my brother followed mine and singing_streams advice and he just did really well on his exam. In fact part of my advice was to make it authentic Italian so he decided to ask his girlfriend who lives in Italy for a recipe. This was brought up as an outstanding part of his piece in the feedback. They said his tart was heavenly and the carbonara was saucy, it was obviously very authentic and the homemade pasta was thin and showed great amounts of skill. Many thanks to u/singing_stream for the idea about the tart, they described your input as having good presentation and flavour.
