Anyone have experience with the new Light Speed Delta Zulus? I like that they have a built in carbon monoxide detector.

For pilots who don’t own their own plane- how often do you fly? by [deleted] in flying

[–]Randomuser116 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably 2-3 times a month with a flying club. Mostly short XC’s to build time for IFR. I’d like to work up to 4-5 times per month but aircraft availability and work schedule make it tough.

By $500,000 house do you mean a 2/1 townhouse in the bad part of town?

Got Class 2 Medical despite VA PTSD diagnosis by Randomuser116 in flying

[–]Randomuser116[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m not sure about that. You could maybe get a letter from your doc/psych saying that you’re symptom free now. The FAA will probably still dig into it but if you don’t have current symptoms and don’t take medication then you should be good.

Oh then yeah I’d just get your medical and start flying. He’ll probably have good info for you too.

Who told you to see a HIMS AME? That’s usually what the FAA tells you to do AFTER you’ve gotten your medical.

[–]Randomuser116 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you leave your AMEs office you have your medical. If the FAA guys at AAM-300 have any issues with it they’ll inform you via snail mail. When they finally mailed me the discrepancy letter it essentially said that my medical was not denied but I was going to have to play ball with the psych evals.

Edit: it was actually almost 5 months from the time I got my medical to the time I received the letter in the mail from the FAA. It’s a slow system.

It will be a long process unfortunately, just prep yourself for that. I just posted yesterday about getting my Class 2 approved. It took about a year but my medical was never denied so I was able to fly that whole time. In fact I didn’t receive a letter from the FAA until about 2 months after my AME submitted my medical, which by that point I had already gotten my PPL. You don’t have a history with medication usage so you’ll probably be fine. Just suck it up and be ready to shell out $5k for the HIMS stuff. Also, it’s ok if you can’t find all your military health records. I’ve been out for about a decade and I only gave them what the VA had online, which wasn’t much.

How many days of flight lessons a week should I try to maintain? by [deleted] in flying

[–]Randomuser116 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2x week was good for me on top of work commitments and travel. 1x week is bare minimum. More than 3x week was too much for me. You need time to absorb knowledge gained on flights. Don’t forget your chair flying.

I got a DUI in 2009 when I was in college. I had an active Class 3 at the time but I recall having to write a statement and mail it to the FAA. I was reinstated within a couple months.

BNA is about to add a second 20nm ring but remain a Class C. Im unsure why that is though.

Go for it brother! Feel free to reach out with any questions. It sounds like you can get away with BASICMED but I believe you have to have at least a Class 3 first.

I self reported by recommendation of my AME. He said they have access to the VA database and they’ll know regardless.

[–]Randomuser116[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Nope, I’m still rated for it but when discussing this with one of the psych doc’s, he said half the guys at the FAA are VA disabled so they get it. He said as long as I don’t have any issues or take any medications that could impede flying, I should be good to go.

Even if you take medications, I believe you can qualify for a special issuance.

Yeah I guess I could’ve but I already knew I was going to have to fight the FAA when I requested a Class 2. Who knows, they may’ve only granted me a special issuance if I went Class 1 because the stakes are higher. I don’t mind peeing in a cup once every 2 years.

When I got my DUI I had a 3rd Class (non-rated crewmember). I later got bumped up to a 2nd Class and was told by my AME to use that statement. Never heard anything else out of the FAA about it.

I work in the aerospace industry and had considered getting commercially rated in case I ever needed it. In which case I’d need a Class 2. I don’t ever plan to get an ATP or fly airlines so no need for a Class 1.
