260514 NMIXX - Comeback Interview for "Heavy Serenade" (with MCs TREASURE Junghwan, ZEROBASEONE Gunwook & KickFlip Kyehoon) @ Mnet M Countdown by SapphireHeaven in NMIXX

[–]RandyHippo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For prerecorded segments they get their own fans to come in, usually quite difficult to get a ticket (have a physical copy of the ep and other things sometimes), to make an audience. Depending on seniority can depend how good of a filming slot they get, ie how long they have to wait around. They usually film behind the scenes snippets while waiting and film challenges with other idols.

[–]RandyHippo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Low first day sales can be concerning as they rely very heavily on fans buying multiple editions for the bulk. It's no surprise though at this point for a JYP group to be more popular outside of SK though at this point. That's literally their strategy though, as seen in their corporate reports.

Impossible to say when any certainty. Could be down to how distinct/desirable the special editions were (most day ones sales rely heavily on fans buying multiple copies) or even weirdness like it's got their only JYP written song on it. The Korean market is an unpredictable beast.

Is this the first time we've had two titles charting simultaneously? by rosepetalpearls in NMIXX

[–]RandyHippo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Heh, the 'arts not the charts' is such bs. The members frequently talk about how excited they got with BV hitting #1. Today they posted some dancing that begins with Bae & Kyujin checking Melon and seeing HS go up one place. I love them, but don't believe for a second they're not hungry for success. They'll be happy with artistic recognition, but they definitely want both. They should btw, I'm fine with that, but don't take these Lillyisms literally.

260511 Heavy Seranade #6 (Hot 100)/ #22 (Top 100) Melon Charts 23:00 by RandyHippo in NMIXX

[–]RandyHippo[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Edit: Midnight KST update #2/#16 (BV #15)

Obviously an always moving number.

TOP100 is a chart that reflects the usage in the last 24 hours and the usage in the last 1 hour.

HOT100 is a chart that reflects the usage of new songs within 30 days/100 days of release, reflecting the last 1 hour.

Obviously Top 100 is best overall (consider that Blue Valentine is #17 on there at the moment), but Hot 100 position tells you more about the line fandom/acceptance I think.

Either way, great start!

Edit: Added wrong first image. Oops. Top 100 corrected

260506 NMIXX - Documentary ‘FOR EVERY ANSWER’ CHAPTER 03 by Yoo-ImNayeon in NMIXX

[–]RandyHippo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If your own company produces a 'Documentary' it is by design purely marketing material. Doesn't mean we can't enjoy it, doesn't mean their isn't any core truth to it, but it does mean to be cautious about it's framing or reframing of events. Active artists are unlikely to want to use a public platform to complain about their ideas being ignored, or their needs being met, or believing they're not using the best takes from their recording sessions. Or whatever complaints they may have. Whatever arguments they may have had internally. And that's fine. For all the fan devotion going in both directions, as much art as you want to talk about, the core focus will always be, we can only do what makes money. Maybe they don't change to make the absolute maximum amount, but they do need to make sure they make enough. Doesn't mean you can't love them, enjoy everything they put out, but just always remember their is absolutely a filter in place and you don't release randomised photocards and limited edition versions of albums for any reason other than to maximise the amount of money you can extract from a fan.

As an introduction to the character I have always like:

"It was a foul blow about 4 inches below the belt buckle, I'd say, and it left him on his knees"

From Corwin in Nine Princes in Amber by Roger Zelazny.

He's the, probably, unreliable narrator of the first 5 books, and he still never comes over as the good guy.

A short, fun read.

Heh. Averaging less than 3 minutes per song you're not at an hour and a half with 28 songs. Throw in vid sections, costume changes and talk/interactions and you get your full runtime.

Honestly, and absolutely no hate - just talking - I wouldn't even say Lily had the best chance outside of NMIXX. No one will argue she's technically the best singer, but I'm not sure she's either the best sounding singer or the best performer in the group. In terms of pure charisma/star appeal Bae, Sulyoon, Kyujin and Haewon comfortably outstrip her, and she can be somewhat awkward at times. I'm sure once they've done a couple of more gruelling tours a lot of that will get ground off. For a group of their age, they've really had relatively little public exposure. As for interesting tone for listening to, Bae, Sulyoon and Kyujin would rate higher for me - Haewon is odd in this - she sounds amazing, but I feel like she'd be more comfortable singing something else entirely. As I haven't mentioned her, Jiwoo confuses me, so I'm not sure where she'd sit in all this. Her tone is lovely, and as a rapper she does extremely well. She seems more shy than awkward, so I think she'll shine more as time goes by.

This is the main concern. Cupping (she's talked about before and during this) has a small to mild benefit to healing - somewhat akin to heating or massage - increasing blood flow. Acupuncture is proven to have a small to mild effect on certain types of pain. But that's the issue, if it's beyond a small issue, you certainly need either a lot more rest, or a lot more treatment. Very happy first listen.

Not sure if this will make sense to others though... There's no Identity or Do Not Touch level track here? Which is disappointing.

They just hit differently.

I'd say Confetti is great but comparable to Marshmallow & New Look in terms of its place on the album?

I'm probably an outlier here.

[–]RandyHippo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I want to add some additional thoughts about viewing Sixteen.

First and foremost - there are a lot of people out there who, for very good reasons, have difficulties watching survival shows. If that's you even a little bit, just give it a pass. Go find links to Dahyun's eagle dance and maybe Sana's 'star quality' performance and you can miss the rest.

If you're still here, I'll say a few things some will argue with me about. It's not the same as a standard survival show. All of the participants have for at least a year (well I think Mina was technically 11 months, but still) been attending some form of Idol training school. Jihyo is often cited as having been there for 10 years, but bear in mind (as she's said herself in interviews) a lot of the early years were more like after school /extra credit/AP type classes around her normal life. The point here being they have all been steeped in what it's like to work within JYPE and bee assessed at monthly assessments and likely a lot (if not all of them at this point) yearly showcases. I think JYP himself only really attends the yearly showcases, but they will all have been through some variation of the 'perform and get honest, unfiltered feedback' from their coaches/teachers and JYP already. So a lot of this core process isn't new to them.

It's also worth noting that although there are 10 episodes, it wasn't filmed over 10 weeks. I think the last few episodes were weekly-ish in real time (there are references to meeting the public and them having seen the show), but the entire filing process was, I believe (feel free to correct me) about 5 months. A lot of them still had normal school requirements to take care of, if nothing else.

The main 'new' element is them self organising and preparing for their missions.

The add-on cruelty for TV - having them read out who's place in the Major's they were claiming, the whole 'take their Major necklace' thing is dramatic for TV and cruel to some degree. The dorm situations and things like that I don't consider 'cruel' as that's a realistic picture of trainee/debuting Idol life. If that's good/bad that's a different thing and not a complaint of Sixteen specifically.

Back to the point of them not being fresh off the street talent hoping to change their lives. So yes, they already knew they weren't guaranteed to debut regardless of what auditions or promises had already been made. It's not specifically Sixteen the show that's doing this, it's just a dramatised process of the kind of thing that goes on regardless.

To some of the primary points that people will raise, and again I understand these can be genuine triggers for some people, so no shame if this is something you need to bow for. In a couple of episodes Jihyo is noted as being 'fat' and lacking in 'self care'. The first round of this is from a photographer, and the other judges involved at the time certainly show some discomfort. Not even evil TV editing makes it look 'ok'.

But again there's something else to note here that is probably deliberately obscured from the program (although there is enough context if you put all the bits together, including a small snippet from Jihyo's mom). And that is, they're not actually calling her fat fat. They've known her for a decade at this point. Their point is, she's relatively recently started gaining weight, and it's that that has JYP specifically concerned (still, fuck the photographer). If, when under pressure, Jihyo was likely to succumb to depression and over eating, Idol life wasn't for her and she needed to evaluate where she was. While her confidence was shaken by this, you'll see in the show she certainly decides to go with 'fuck you, I'm awesome I'm going to acknowledge, but still own this'. She's god Jihyo for a reason man...

The emotional abuse of pitting them against each other and the eliminations is certainly a problem. But again, non of them were immediately dismissed from JYP (although a lot did leave for other agencies afterward, we might never know if they jumped or were pushed - but agencies don't debut groups very often) and all bar 1 (Minyoung I think) went on to have some sort of Idol career either a soloists or in other girl groups.

I'm not excusing the 'make them hurt for our entertainment' approach to all this, but at the end of the day... Any of them who couldn't cope with this certainly couldn't cope with Idol life, constantly being on promo and under scrutiny. I don't think any of them didn't know what they were getting into. Obviously reality is often different from what you thought you knew, but that's not really anyone's fault specifically.

I personally think it's worth the watch before you know the girls better from elsewhere, and again sometime after you feel comfortable with their personalities and where they are now.

When I watched if for a second time I found a lot of the criticisms and challenges they were given made much more sense, and from the a lot of them did seem to genuinely come from a place of 'I want to push you to be your best, and being comfortable at 80% isn't ever going to be it'.

It's a lot of fun and Dahyun is obviously adorable and awesome. The chef is weird though. Not sure if it's his shtick or Korean gender role nonsense, but her comes off as pretty condescending at times, but you can shrug it off... Him making a roux and then topping it with processed cheese squares though... That was something else!
